This is Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle. If it was any hotter in this Florida place, I could bake a pancake on Digby Pancake’s butt. But that would not be a tasty pancake. I can tell you that right now.
If it was any hotter in this Florida place, my name wouldn’t be Peanut Butter Brickle. It would be Boiled Peanuts. And that just isn’t as catchy.
Yeah. It’s hot, just in case you didn’t know. And lately, when it is this hot, it’s hard for Digby and I to get much accomplished in our day. We seem to walk slower. Bark softer. And we don’t put up quite as much of a fight when it comes to bathtime. That water sure feels good.

Not too long ago, Girl Person may have pushed us a little harder or farther. She is all about us getting enough exercise.
But she also is now a little more flexible. Understanding. And our trots have gotten shorter. We lead the way more often. And she listens to us more. When it’s too hot to trot, we find alternatives. Like mingling with the pups at the campground. This is Sadie.
Now. Don’t jump to conclusions. It’s too hot to be jumping.
Because it was too hot to trot or jump or move, we decided to sit in the dog area for a bit under the palm trees.
The sun was so bright that I didn’t see Sadie at first. She was a bit quiet. And Deputy Digby was busy following Girl Person around for treats. So we introduced ourselves slowly. And I found out she was about a year and half old with a quiet disposition and she couldn’t stop staring at me. Obviously. Girl Person said it was the sun in her eyes. I disagree.
But as we sat there in mutually beneficial conversation, it occurred to me that we were very different in age. And I started to compare my stamina to hers. I wondered if she appreciated how much more energy she had than me. And yet, she told me that she appreciated my wisdom. My way of calming her down. Digby didn’t say much of anything. He was too busy begging for treats.
Have you ever felt bad because you couldn’t do as much as someone else? Maybe you’ve gotten older. Or sick. Or hurt. Maybe you’ve battled the Depression Monster like Girl Person. Maybe you wish life was like it used to be when you felt better.
It’s taken me a long time to learn, and especially over the past year when Digby got sick, that things have changed. We have changed. And that’s ok. It’s truly ok.
Because when you accept what you can and cannot do, that acceptance takes away the guilt. You know who you are and what you are capable of. Comparing ourselves to others and wanting to be the same as they are isn’t productive. It takes away our worth. No one can be who we individually are.
Because it was too hot to trot and easier to rest in the shade, I met Sadie. And I may not have been able to grace her with my presence on another day. Embrace who you are at this moment. Don’t compare yourself to others or even who you used to be. Change doesn’t mean you’ve failed in life. It means you’ve survived. Embrace where you are and who you are today. You are pretty amazing. At least that’s what Sadie told me.
