This is Deputy Digby Pancake. What’s the rush?
I ask that every day. Persons always have an agenda. Somewhere to go and somewhere to be. Even when they are relaxing, they are thinking of what’s next in their day.
Unless you are thinking about lunch or dinner or snacks or brunch or breakfast, well, I believe a watch should be done away with. Does anyone wear a watch anymore? They are as necessary to me as pants.
Yesterday, no one could wear a watch unless it was waterproof. For two days straight, it rained and rained and rained some more.
Cold rain that makes you wish you were on a warm island somewhere with no watches.
Girl Person took us on a hike. And it was so cold and wet we really hoped we were walking to that island. Wherever it was. And yet, the trees gave us a bit of shelter. The forest has a way of protecting us.
But as the day went on, the rain seemed to get colder. And wetter. And it never stopped. Girl Person was trying to run with her laundry in the rain, doing dishes in the rain and she was getting a bit annoyed. As we went out for our afternoon bathroom break, since I hadn’t been outside as much as she had, I was enjoying the air. The smells on the grass. The mud. The mud again.
And that’s when she told me to stop with the dilly dally. And I saw no dill pickle. No. No I did not. And I found it to be a strange request.
Brickle gets called a pickle all the time. Especially when he is in a sour mood. But if I was a pickle, I would be a sweet pickle. So there was no problem with me not dilly dallying. So I stopped looking for pickles. And stepped in the mud again.
And Girl Person? She said it was time for the third bath of the day with warm jugs of water she had to walk thru more mud to get. And I found this all a bit ridiculous. Has your day ever been ridiculous?
Girl Person told me there is a time to meander and slow down. But sometimes you have to get down to business and do your business so you don’t freeze. And Brickle agreed. And I stopped looking for pickles. And I didn’t stop stepping in mud but I did do my business. And I got to snuggle up and dry off.
Do you ever dilly dally when you should be doing something you know you need to do? There is a time to slow down. But there is a time to take care of business so you can enjoy life! There are all things we don’t want to do and it’s easy to give ourselves permission not to do them. But hard work makes for easy days when you can dilly dally and put some extra pickles on that sandwich. Make mine a good one.
We are in this Pennsylvania place until tomorrow! Then back on the road! Where are we headed? Stay tuned!
