Talking Trout

This is Peanut Butter Brickle. Have you ever had a conversation that you will always remember? Something that someone said that always stuck with you? Was it with a fish? A trout?

Yesterday when we were taking our morning hike to the top of the waterfall, we made a stop at the trouts’ house.

Now, ever since we have arrived, we have not seen any trout here. But there is a sign that they should be. We just figured that they were on vacation or something. Well, they came home. And we had a very nice conversation.

I was about to take a sip of water when I looked down and saw a trout. A small trout, but a beautiful one. He wasn’t too happy at first to see me because he didn’t know that company was coming over. He hid underneath a log and little did he know that I could still see his tail.

So I made sure to tell him that we meant no harm, although I would highly suggest that he stay out of Digby’s way.

He wasn’t very talkative at first. Mostly because he was used to persons trying to catch him.

He was used to a one sided conversation. He was used to not being valued for who he was, but only as something to eat. So he was kind of quiet.

So I let him know that Girl Person knew some things about trout.

And that we thought he was pretty. Not as pretty as me though. He did not argue.

And I told him that we didn’t want to eat him. Well. I can’t speak for Digby.

When was the last time you thought about personalities? Personalities in all living things.

Personality is not just a feature unique to humans and pets.

Girl Person told me that there has been research confirming that even trout all have different personalities.

Personalities are for a reason. They help us survive and adapt. They help us to enjoy life. They make us unique!

When we only think of animals in one way, like something to eat, how much we are missing out on.

Valuing an individual like a trout may not be something we were taught to do.

Valuing a trout’s personality to you may not be as important than what you have for dinner. But have you asked yourself why? Have you wondered what you are missing out on when you only see the world and who lives there one way?

My conversation with the trout wasn’t long, but it was pleasant. Groovy.

I learned a lot about trout that day.

I was happy that I took the time to learn. Life is more than just us. But we can make a big difference in someone else’s.
