It’s Your Thing

This is Peanut Butter Brickle. Many don’t know that Digby Pancake and I are well, opposites. There’s not much that we have in common. And in fact, the older we get, the further apart we seem to stretch Girl Person’s arms. I want to go one way. Digby wants to go the other. Every. Single. Day. It is quite a show.

It’s not that we are trying to be opposite. And I’ve learned that even if you are in the same family, that doesn’t mean you are the same. It doesn’t mean you will have the same interests. It doesn’t mean that you’ll have the same likes or dislikes. And that’s ok. You are the only you. I am the only me.

Girl Person sometimes gets frustrated because she can’t do exactly what we both want to do. She always tells us that she can’t go two ways at once. As much as she would like to.

But what happens when you are not like your friends, or even your family? What if you feel like you have nothing in common with the ones that you love most?

I asked myself this question yesterday.  I have always felt a bit different.

Digby Pancake always goes with the flow.  I find a reason to swim up creek.

I think about things a lot.  I like to sit and think outside.  Digby just does. Whatever his heart tells him to do.

Sometimes I wish I was more like Digby.  But Digby says sometimes he was more like me. And well, Girl Person just wants us both to be happy. And she said the best way to do that is not worry about being different.  The best way to be happy is to do YOUR thing.

When you do your thing, it’s like all the ingredients that are put together in a delicious meal.  Each ingredient adds to the flavor.

We all feel different sometimes.  But being different than the ones you love doesn’t mean that you don’t have anything in common.  Digby Pancake and I would never want to be without each other, even though we disagree a lot.  I suppose that is part of the fun of a family.  And every family has it’s own ingredients.

Many of us are around our families more than ever lately.  It’s going to take patience, kindness and acknowledgment that we have to do our own thing every now and then!
