This is Fruitycake. I’m a dog. I don’t wear makeup. And I don’t want to.
Have you seen me? Have you seen this fabulous color palette that I am?
I’m like fine art. Brickle taught me to be confident in case you’re wondering.
And well, my Girl Person is sort of the outdoorsy type. She likes dresses and pretty things and she likes some makeup. By some, I mean maybe lipstick.
But always mascara.
However, the last week, there has been no mascara. No lipstick either. She first made the excuse that it was melting off in the heat.
Then she made the excuse that she ran out of it.
Then me and Boy Person would catch her crying and sitting by Brickle’s resting place. We would catch her staring into space.
Boy Person told her she needs to not do anything this week but feel better and he has been getting the groceries too. He goes again tomorrow. I hope he remembers my pizza…just saying.
Then, every night for the past week, she leaves bed and goes outside and just sits or tries to sleep on the little couch downstairs. And there is definitely no mascara at any of those times.
Now. There is nothing wrong when persons don’t wear mascara. But when that’s the one thing you do enjoy, and you don’t think you can or should, that’s a different story. Sadness over losing Brickle this time of year is a lot. I get it, Girl Person. I miss him too. Do you remember that?
And does Girl Person remember we have a hugely important appointment next week? She feels like she can’t get all the papers done and we have to travel there. She feels overwhelmed. And I think this is when she needs mascara the most.
Girl Person, I need you to take a deep breath and put on the mascara. Put on your resilience and your resolve to get thru this with flying colors like my fur!
Brickle wouldn’t want you to be like this during this week or any week. Because for many reasons, there is one important reason for him. It would interrupt a time he should be celebrated. And we know he liked and likes that!
So do what you need to do. Buy some mascara. Heck, buy a dress you need to in order to look your best. And I have a feeling that mascara is just one simple thing, but if you accomplish that, you’ll accomplish it all.
Are you like Girl Person? Are you holding back from being happy because memories make you sad? What person would you be without that sadness weighing you down? You aren’t the thing that happened. You’re stronger than that. And you need to put on whatever your mascara is to you too.
