This is Fruitycake. I was on a walk with Girl Person this morning. It wasn’t a long walk, because we were up all night. She’s really having a hard time just breathing, she said. Boy Person tries to help her and then he doesn’t feel well either. So you get the picture. Missing Brickle this week especially has surprised them at how much it hurts.
As you can imagine, I’m working overtime trying to help them. So when I took Girl Person on that walk this morning, it made me happy when we heard singing from another rustico. It made me happy that here, even the every day things feel special. Because they are special.

Special. It’s something I have learned that we all need. To feel special. To be special to someone else. To be recognized for who we are, to be appreciated and valued.

To be special isn’t about being famous or rich. Although there is nothing wrong with that.
But to be special is to truly understand that even a smile can change the way someone’s day goes. To be special means you make a difference in someone’s life in the small ways. Who do you remember the most? That special teacher you had that encouraged you or a movie star?

Do you remember when your mom made you lunch every day for school or that president that was elected when you were seven? Who made the most impact in your life?
A hummingbird moth is one of Girl Person’s favorites parts of living here. Last year, they buzzed around the flowers, bit by winter, they were gone. So she’s been looking forward to them coming back. And when they did this week, it was an event here.
One even flew in the house and when Girl Person told it not to worry, she would help it back outside, it stopped and let her.
And yesterday, when one landed on her shoulder and stayed with her for two hours, that was not only special, but it made her feel special. To be special. Like the hummingbird bird moth, like you, like me.

I hope you truly hear me when I tell you that I think you’re special. Special for reading this blog and trying to listen to what a dog thinks.
You’re special for your ability to see the small ones in life. To be special is it make others feel special. And you do.
