Episode 20: Brickle’s Secret To Happiness, The Mystery Of Fog & Being Brave At The Vet!

This is Fruitycake. Bow WOW, my darling dogs! Have you ever wanted something another dog had? Maybe it was a bigger treat, a softer blanket, a better spot on the couch or a Person who seemed to be giving somebody else all the attention? Well, I have! And today on Fruitycake’s Pawcast, I am telling you about a very important lesson my best friend Peanut Butter Brickle taught me when I first became part of our family. It is a lesson about jealousy, happiness and learning that someone else’s good fortune does not take anything away from our own.

When I first arrived, Brickle was already very loved. He knew where the treats were kept, how to get the best blankets and exactly what to do when he wanted attention from the Persons. I could have spent all my time being jealous of him. Instead, Brickle gave me some very wise advice. He told me to watch and learn! And that is exactly what I did. I learned how to get treats, how to get petted and even how to get left alone when I needed some peace and quiet. But the most important thing I learned was that Brickle was happy when good things happened to me, too. He didn’t see my happiness as something that took away from his own.

I still carry that lesson with me. And I think the Persons could learn something from it, too. Sometimes we look at what someone else has accomplished, where they are going or what they have, and we forget that we can be happy for them while still working toward our own dreams. Brickle taught me that we don’t have to compete for every good thing in life. Sometimes the best thing we can do is celebrate someone else and learn from them.

But wait until you meet today’s special guest!

FOG!

Yes, my darling dogs, FOG! That mysterious stuff that rolls through the trees and makes the whole world look like somebody forgot to turn on the lights. Did you know fog is actually a cloud on the ground? Or that it can create something called a fogbow? It can even help provide moisture to plants and animals!

And fog has a lesson for us, too. Fog does wonderful things without making a big announcement about them. It doesn’t demand applause or remind everyone how helpful it has been. It simply goes about its business, quietly making a difference. Imagine if we all helped others because we cared, without needing everyone to know what we had done. I think the world would be a much nicer place. And possibly a quieter one. Shhhhh!

Then we have a very special question from our Barker, Beauty in Nantucket! Beauty wants to know how I find the courage to go to the veterinarian. Well, Beauty, you certainly picked the right week to ask me that question! I just went to the veterinarian myself, and I can tell you that bravery does not always come naturally to this Fruitycake.

I don’t particularly enjoy being examined, and I have been known to have a few concerns about those tables that move up and down. But I have learned something important from crossing streams on our walks. Sometimes I am afraid to put my paws in the water, but when I look across and see my Persons waiting for me, I can find the courage to take the next step. Going to the vet is a little like that. I try to look beyond the scary part and remember why I am there. Staying healthy means more walks, more adventures and more time with the Persons I love. And sometimes the veterinarian even gives me treats!

Being brave doesn’t mean you aren’t afraid. It means doing what you need to do even when you are.

So today we have three very different teachers. Brickle teaches us to celebrate others instead of being jealous. Fog teaches us to do good things quietly. And Beauty reminds us that courage is something we can practice, one paw at a time.

And the best part? You can listen to all of it for FREE!
