This is Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle. If you have ever been to a Vet Person, you may understand what I’m about to say. There’s a lot of stuff going that you don’t want to go into. There’s a lot of stuff you want to avoid. Like being there at all.
And life is like a vet’s office. You try not to get poked. You try not to get hurt. You try to feel better. And you get other people’s opinions whether you want to hear them or not.
But yesterday, I had no choice in the matter of a vet visit. As usual, I was told I was handsome. As usual, I was told I was gorgeous. As usual, I knew it. But it’s always good to hear. Over and over.
They did the routine question thing. Question after question. I am a man of mystery. They did not know that.
But Girl Person told them about this lump who I have named Lump. Because that’s what he is and I call it like it is.
The Vet Person told us that my lump was lumpy. She told me that the safest thing would be to test it. And so, she said she would poke it and send off some stuff to a lab from the lump. A lab? What does a Labrador Retriever have to do with all this? What can he tell me? I just don’t know.
The Vet Person also told Girl Person that my heart beat wasn’t fast. Well, yeah. Because when everyone else sees me, their heart beats so fast that it makes mine seem slow.
Girl Person said I had been like that since a puppy, but since it is so slow, the Vet Person said that testing the lump instead of taking it out was the best thing for now. So for now, Lump stays. And after all the questions, and poking and temperature taking, well, we still had no answers. Because we have to wait on the lab. For a week.
Sometimes, you think that you have one concern in life, and it turns into another concern. Sometimes, it can seem like you can’t handle it all. Sometimes, you don’t want to wait for answers. But sometimes? You have to. And that may be the hardest part.
Some parts of life are hard to deal with. Hard to handle. Hard not to worry about. You do the absolute best you can. Don’t fool yourself that you are doing your best. Really try to do your best. It does no good for me to worry for a week. It does me more good to eat more peanut butter cookies.
My heart may not beat fast. But as Sheriff, you have to be cool, calm and collected. I can do this. I can wait. And when the lab finally gets around to my results, I will give you the report. In life, we may be going thru the motions. Not even sure if we are still enjoying much at all. Sometimes, we don’t feel as alive as we can. Sometimes, our heart doesn’t beat as strong. It happens. So it’s up to us to find out why, ask ourselves the questions, and help ourselves to feel better.
We may think we know what’s wrong, but often, we find out there was an underlying issue. We can always fix it. You just have to make an appointment with the truth.
