Almost

This is Fruitycake. Some days run together. Have you ever had one of those weeks when you can’t remember what day it actually is?

It’s like you’re on autopilot and are just living. Even us dogs have those weeks. You may not believe this, or maybe you don’t want to because it comes with too much responsibility.

But us dogs like variety in life too. And we don’t want to have the same day over and over again. Even taking a walk down a different street can mean everything to us.

So what happens when you are on autopilot and just concentrating on what you think you need to do? You can stop seeing what’s around you. And that can be dangerous. Especially if you’re in the woods. Especially if you’re hiking and in that Italy place and see a machine you think isn’t being used.

There we were, Girl Person and I. We are in the middle of a very hot summer heatwave here and we went to the woods somewhere to cool off. We went a little off the beaten track. I went to get a drink at a stream.

Girl Person sat on a rock with that machine we didn’t think was being used. Actually, it was just a cable and nothing on it. Girl Person thought that was odd. You see, they use these things called telefericas here. When you live up a mountain they put a pulley system up with a big sled looking thing. And then they put stuff in that and pull it up or push it down. And you may guess what happened.

The machine we thought wasn’t being used? Oh, it was…and it was loaded up with so much stuff it came sliding down the mountain. And we had no time at all to think. None.

Literally two inches above Girl Person’s head was a machine sliding down at roller coaster speed.

It missed her by literal inches. I panicked and ran to attack it after it had stopped and Girl Person? She said we had to get out of there quick before anything else came down. She grabbed me and we ran. She looked me over to make sure I was ok and she felt her head to make sure it was still there. It was. But me and her? I have to tell you. We won’t ever be the same. Yes, I’m that serious.

If you’ve enjoyed this blog for the last 14 years, now is the time to show your support to keep it going

You see, we almost aren’t here to tell this tale. I almost lost my tail and Girl Person wouldn’t have needed that hair color she has been wishing for. Nope. Life can be taken away that quickly and for many, it is.

Almost is a lot to handle when it’s life changing moments that make you understand you better stop the autopilot mode. My persons were in it for a long time. And although it’s harder work here than we ever imagined, it’s living with a goal in mind.

Of helping others. That’s what we prayed for today. And hope if you’re in autopilot mode, or even almost autopilot mode, that you stop and get real. We can lose those we love in a second. We can disappear in a second too. Get real. Choose living today. Not almost. All the way.

Our goal before the end of the year (that’s only four months) is to get mold and mildew removed inside and painted. As well, a basic filming studio inside to start our worldwide animal rescue program and outreach. As winter months approach here, starting this interview programming with rescues around the world and starting our education programs will be forefront. This will also be key in showing the authorities here we are walking the walk of making a difference! Can you help? Here are ways you can!

Our mission has long been rooted in helping animals in urgent need through awareness and direct action. Over the years, we have cultivated a substantial international following through our social media platforms under the name 2 Traveling Dogs, and Under The Crow which allows us to reach more than 40 million individuals daily. We use this platform to share stories and urgent appeals for adoptable animals worldwide, helping connect them with loving homes.

As part of our transition to having a physical base in Italy, we are working to sustainably renovate our home and land, which presents unique terrain challenges. Prioritized improvements include:

Installing a new roof

Clearing and maintaining paths across the landscape

Developing on-site studios for educational filming and global rescue outreach by way of social media

Our goal is to collaborate international rescue organizations to amplity animal welfare efforts globally and locally. We also plan to continue our travel and content creation to spotlight worldwide rescue work and encourage compassionate action.

We estimate this initial development phase to span

2-4 years, understanding that unforeseen challenges may require flexibility. Our intentions are long-term and community-focused, and we are committed to respectful integration and contribution to the region and beyond.
