This is Brickle. Do you have things that you hide about yourself? Maybe you’re embarrassed.
Maybe you’re afraid that if others knew this thing about you that they wouldn’t like you so much. Or not at all.
I used to feel like that. I used to wonder if I acted like my true self if others would accept me as I was. And when I stopped worrying about what others thought, it was sure easier.
I thought that I had it all figured out. This not caring about what others thought thing. Until Girl Person caught me eating birdseed. And when she asked me what in the world I was doing, I felt embarrassed. If I wasn’t a bird, why did I want to eat the birdseed?

I did not know. But I did.
And it was real good. At least it was wild birdseed.
I thought about hiding the fact I liked the birdseed from Girl Person. But I couldn’t. She had already seen the evidence of my affinity for the seeds. And the nuts. There really was no hiding it.
Girl Person didn’t make fun of me. But she said she just didn’t know I liked birdseed.
She said it doesn’t matter what a label says. She said we don’t need labels. We don’t have to follow labels. We do have to be ourselves. And that’s ok.
Digby said though if I was eating the birdseed, the birds might want some of our dinner. I wonder if they like broccoli because I could share that.
Variety is the spice of life. Our tastes might change as we get older, but maybe we are just becoming more of our true selves. It depends how you peck it apart.
In a world where there are labels and expectations enforced on others, let individuals be who they are without judgement. Enjoy the ride that is yours and yours alone. Don’t worry about others.
If you’re less busy judging others, you’ll have more time to be you. Birdseed and all.
