I Think It Would Be Better If You Didn’t Bring Your Dogs Back

It’s Sunday! And that means a look back at a Brickle and Digby story! Did you know that only a few of our readers, an average of 2% make this blog possible with donations. If you feel our animal rescue mission is worth supporting, and you like this daily blog, you can help here with any amount!

Our first travels brought us to California from Florida. I had just got a part time job, and I didn’t want to leave Brickle and Digby for any amount time with both of us working.

So, I started looking for a dog daycare to bring them to. This was a relatively new concept at that time. And I was nervous about it. But they were young, energetic and loud!

So I found a daycare for dogs. I made an appointment, and off we went to check it out. The boys started having fun with other dogs. I felt ok about leaving them a couple hours for a test run. And as soon as those two hours passed, I was back. When I walked in the door, I immediately felt the vibes were off.

When I walked in, the owner had them ready to go. Too eagerly. I asked how things went and she said, great! Her husband was standing there and he seemed a bit scared of Brickle. I told them I would call them soon when I figured out my work schedule. And as soon as I said that, Brickle turned towards her husband, lunged and growled. Now, he could have bit him. But all he wanted to do was scare him. And yep. It worked. I said bye and almost ran out. Brickle had made his point. Obviously, I wasn’t taking them back there. And the next day, I had a voicemail.

“Mrs. Johnson, I think it would be better if you didn’t bring your dogs back here. I can make other suggestions.” I didn’t need her suggestions. I only had to ask Brickle.

That was the first of many times after that Brickle told me the truth about people. I don’t know what exactly happened there or if he just didn’t like the guy. But years later, when we tried another daycare, they gave him a report card.  I was at the desk looking at it there like oh, he got straight A’s! How nice.

And as a man brought him out to me, Brickle turned around, scared him, and the man just said, have a good day. I left with his straight A report card and never came back. Brickle was not fooled by anyone. And I listened to him.

Yes, we did find people who he liked and trusted. A few. A very few. Kinda like me.  But when Brickle trusted and loved, he had your back. You never had to be afraid. I miss him so much.

And Digby? Let’s just say he was not the innocent bystander in all of this.

His humping, howling and general mayhem was another issue. Yes, yes. I see how all of this may sound like they were trouble. Because they were trouble.  But those days were the funnest and funniest days ever. So when your dogs act up, take it with a laugh. But when they don’t like someone, take that serious.

When it comes to keeping your dogs safe and giving them the freedom to enjoy life without constant supervision, finding trusted solutions is just as important as finding trusted people. While some dogs thrive in social settings, others feel most secure when they can roam their home environment safely. That’s where DogWatch Hidden Fences can make a real difference. These systems are designed to create a safe, invisible boundary that protects your dogs while allowing them the space to run, play, and explore without the risks of wandering off. For pet parents who travel or move often, knowing your dogs have a consistent, reliable containment solution can bring huge peace of mind.

I have found that dogs are so good at seeing the good from the bad in people. I would trust a dog’s judgment over another person, anytime.
