This is Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle. Have you ever smelled something that made you stop in your tracks? No. I’m not talking about Digby on a Monday. Or a Tuesday. Or any day, really. I’m talking about memories. Smelling memories.
When persons are going about their lives everyday doing all those things that they do, they rarely stop to catch their breath. But little do they know that sometimes, life has a way of stopping you.
As Girl Person and Boy Person were trying to navigate our way yesterday, they were talking and talking and talking. They were cold and tired from the last few days of rain. They were talking about how much work they had. And as Girl Person does, she sat with me on the floor to catch her breath. She put her nose in my fur and took a deep breath. This time it was a really, really deep breath.
I know when to growl for no reason and I know when to be nice. This was a time to be nice. And this was a time to do my job and help Girl Person to feel better. Whatever I did seemed to do the trick. All of a sudden, Girl Person exclaimed that I smelled so nice. And that I reminded her of when she was little and smelled her Strawberry Shortcake doll.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a Strawberry Shortcake doll. But I wonder if someone could make a peanut butter cookie doll. That would be good.
What Girl Person said next confused me a bit. Just a bit. She said I didn’t smell like Strawberry Shortcake. But the feeling she got with me was the same.
It’s amazing to me how much persons need memories. They may live their lives being so busy.
They grow older, they get more responsibilities. But thru it all, they are the same. The person they were when they were young is who they are now. And sometimes it takes a smell to make them remember that.
Yes. Sight is important. So is hearing. So is feeling. But smell can make that all happen at once.
It can bring you back to when you felt safe and loved. When the world seemed to be an easier place to figure out. So take a moment to be you again today. Smell the smells. Just hold your nose around Digby.
