This is Deputy Digby Pancake. I’ve always said that it doesn’t matter how slow you go as long as you get there.  I don’t know where I am going though.  So am I there yet?  Just wondering. I must be doing a great job.

There are many things that I don’t understand about persons.  And one of which is their fondness to pick up things and carry them.  I have never been one to put extra weight on myself unless it is from eating pancakes.  But when we are hiking, I often see persons with sticks.  They carry the sticks.  They leave the sticks for other people to use.  And I’m not sure if they know that there are a million sticks on the ground already.  Is it particularly necessary to carry a particular one around?

Girl Person tried to tell me that persons find uses out of sticks that they think are the special ones.  First they pick them off of the ground, make sure that they are tall enough for the sticks, and then they use them to clear out spider webs. They use them for balance. They use them for protection.

But I just have to wonder.  Ugh.  Maybe…can you get a dog for all that?

Seems to me that a walking stick would be a much easier pet to have.  They don’t get fleas. They clean up after themselves.  They don’t eat a lot I guess. They don’t throw up in the car. Or hump all dogs on Wednesday.  Who did that?  And so persons? I can see your point. You like sticks.  They are always by your side.

So I have a question for you.  Where is your walking stick in life?  What or who do you depend on when things get rough or rocky?  What carries you through?  There are going to be times when we need help.  As much as Sherif Brickle wants to think that he doesn’t, if he didn’t have me to push him in creeks, pee on his head or give him someone to police, he would have no purpose other than to look at himself.  And we all need help.  But you have to find that perfect stick.  You have to look for it and start carrying it before you need it so that you know it is there. So if you have been relying on yourself for too long, and you are getting tired, where is your walking stick?  Find it.

As we were walking back from hiking in the rain yesterday, we saw this sign.

You see, once we find our walking stick of life, the people and animals that help support us, don’t take them for granted. There may come a day that we can’t find them. Where is your walking stick?  Let’s start walking.  Where are we going, though?
