Carolina In My Mind

This is Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle.  Are you still with us still in this South Carolina place? So many days, we hear our friends online say that they wish they were here.

Some friends say that they miss where they used to call home.  Some say that they have always wanted to visit.  No matter where we are in our travels, someone wants to be there. So it makes us feel special that we can be here for you if you can’t. Wherever it is that you want to be at.  But what many of you don’t know is that you can be with us if you want.  And this week? If you want to, you can go to South Carolina in your mind.

Now, if you are here with us this week in the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina place, you are also with about ten million billion mosquitos.  You are with Deputy Digby’s bad breath.  You are with the persons who are stressed out about broken down parts on the RV.  And yet, if you are with me, none of that matters because you can’t think of much else with this handsome.  It is a talent I have that I hold very dear, but I don’t hold it too long because that would mean I would get tired about it.

But somehow, this South Carolina place is special, even with all of this going on.  They call it the Low Country.  It makes you appreciate the slowness of life and how just walking and listening and sitting on your front porch can be magical.

It makes you wonder if everywhere else in this world is too fast, too complicated and needs more mosquitos.  That answer is no to the mosquito part.

It also makes you think deeper about things, even when you are as deep as me.  As I was sitting on the beach yesterday, longing for the shade under some trees which are not on the beach, I wondered.  Why was Myrtle Beach called Myrtle Beach?

Yeah. So a tree or a shrub called a Myrtle.  Well, I thought it was a good name for a turtle, so I thought that perhaps there was a Myrtle the Turtle that used to live here.  But I suppose I will have to believe the first explanation although not as fun.

Many times, we visit places and just take them for what they are, right in front of us. Probably most people who have visited Myrtle Beach, South Carolina don’t think about how it got its name, the history or the people that were first here.  But how can we truly experience a place without knowing its history?  How can you truly know a person without knowing his or her history?

Beyond the places we visit are histories for how they came to be. And when we open our minds to learning, not just about myrtle trees, but about the people, that will make us better for it.  If we take the time to learn about our friends, and what made them into who they are, we are better for that too.  Have you ever just taken someone for face value?  Unless their face is as perfect as mine, you are missing out.  Because it is easy to judge someone or some place as what we see on the surface.  But it is when we dig a little deeper that the real love begins.

You see, in every place we visit, there are people that want to be there. Why? They know about it, it is in their hearts, and it is in their mind.

Travel is good for many things.  More people get to see my handsome, and Deputy Digby gets to try more pancakes.  But it also is good to open your mind and heart to learning about people.  People who made the areas you love so much and that are in your heart.  So even if you can’t go to that special place you have been longing to see, you can go there in your mind today.  Learn something new about it.  Find out something new about yourself by learning about others.
