She’s A Lady

This is Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle.  Have you ever met someone that brought out the best in you?  You’re welcome.  But even I can appreciate the beauty of another. A new friend named Lady.

And when she invited the Deputy and I over for a late breakfast at her house in New Bern, North Carolina this weekend, I can tell you, it was love at first sight.  For her.  Seriously.  What did you expect?

You see, it is not often that law enforcement is actually invited over.  Usually, we invite ourselves.  But we were asked to come visit Lady and her person, and I don’t turn down an invitation to go to a house without wheels with air conditioning and treats.  So yeah, we told Lady that we would stop by.  Girl Person had told us about her.  Lady was about eight years old and her person had recently adopted her.

And I knew as soon as we pulled up that Lady had really been fortunate.  Not only did she have a person that loved her, but she got to live in this pretty New Bern place with all the rivers and the forest on a tree lined street.  Oh, as a dog, you can’t ask for much more than that.  We knew that no matter what Lady has been thru in the past, it was going to be alright.  And I really wanted to tell her that in person.

As usual, the Deputy thinks that he can win over the ladies with a bit of howling and generally making a nuisance of himself.  He is extremely good at that.

But I had to lay down the law.  On Digby.  With a bit of maple syrup and chicken nuggets, all bets are off for the Deputy and if he had pants, that would have been off too.  He doesn’t know his limits, and this was not that kind of party, and well, he. Was. Arrested.

Life on the road can get a bit lonely sometimes when the persons have so much to do and so much driving to do.  So to meet new friends in itself is a treat for us.  And well, just an hour or so together made me realize life is sure more than a schedule.  There is always going to be something to do.  You are always going to have work to do.  But as Pappy used to say, “sit down and stay for awhile.”  And I don’t think many persons do that.

They think that they have to finish all that they need to do before they can enjoy life.  Well, let me tell you this, unless your name is Deputy Digby Pancake, you are always going to have something to do.  So leave it for today, and make time for someone who wants to see you.  Make time for someone that needs a bright spot in their day.  Because not only will they be happy for it, but you will be too.

And that thing that you have to do tomorrow?  You can bet that it will be there.  And something new will be added to it. We are often our worst critic.  Unless you are me, than there really is not much to criticize.  You see, we are too hard on ourselves.  Life is not about that deadline, or that grass that needs to be mowed.  Life is not about that bill that is a day late or those clothes that need washing.  Life is about the people and animals and nature that make it up, that was there before all of these distractions came into play.

So take a breath.  Meet a new friend. Call an old friend.  Say a kind word.  Do a kind deed.  Eat some spaghetti.  It’s that simple.

And as Lady was rescued by good people and found her new life in a beautiful world, know that new beginnings are only made when we put away the old and make way for them.  Don’t keep doing the same things and expect different results.  If you want to be happy, it may be time to try something new.  Ask Lady.  After she is done admiring me.  You may need to sit down for awhile.

Well, New Bern, North Carolina?  We are leaving today!  It was so much fun, and we learned a lot.

But we are on the road again today…a very long trip and we need good thoughts sent our way for the Big Blue Treat Wagon!  Here we come, Chesterfield, Virginia!

And Lady? Until we meet again, I will admire the flowers you gave me.  I’m real excited about getting them.  I have never received flowers before.  But I’m not sure if I have ever met such a Lady before either.

Until we meet again. We wish Lady well on her heartworm treatment that starts today.
