Help

This is Fruitycake. Asking for help is a funny thing for us dogs. Usually, we don’t want help. We think that we can certainly take care of ourselves. Take, for instance, me, your Fruitycake. I hate loud noises, and especially construction noises. When I encounter those things, I want to run. Flee. Escape. I don’t want anyone’s help in analyzing the situation. I don’t want anyone’s help in explaining things. I feel like I can handle things in my own way.

Except for the other day.

Girl Person and I were sitting down, watching all the goings-on of a summer scene in this Italy place. Chaos. Commotion. People having fun, people yelling, traffic, you name it.

But all of a sudden, a gate started opening up behind us and got the strap of Girl Person’s purse caught. Luckily, she didn’t have her purse on because she isn’t allowed to be carrying anything right now. But someone had to help her. And she had to help me not freak out by the gate, the person helping, and all that.

Help.

We had to accept it.

And then there was Boy Person by the path waiting.

You see, the persons have to use what they call propane tanks to heat water. And Boy Person usually has to go to a town by two trains and a bus and back, and then carry it all the way back and then back up the path. But the last time he did that, the store person realized what he was doing. And this time, he offered to bring it to him.

Boy Person didn’t want him to go out of his way. But the store person insisted. And on top of that, refused to take any tip. He was so happy to help. And I got to use the tip for pizza. It was a win! A win for everyone!

Now, Boy Person still had to carry that tank up. One hundred and fifty pounds of it. But it didn’t seem as heavy. The load was lighter because of someone helping. And it helped me because my person was helped.

Help is an effect that gets passed down.

It’s like when we get help from readers with tips for the blog! We can help others because we have been helped. We save lives together. We don’t do it alone.

Help may be hard to accept when we need it the most. But it’s in those times that you remember that when someone else needs it the most, you’ll be the one there at the end of the path.

P.S. Right now, my persons need a little help too. Girl Person is still recovering from surgery, and everyday life here at the rustico has not gotten any easier. As we work to sell Under The Crow and prepare for the next chapter of helping animals, every donation helps with necessities, recovery expenses, and keeping us going through this difficult transition. If you can help, no amount is too small. Donations can be made at www.tinyurl.com/2tdnecessities, Venmo: travelingdogs2, or Zelle: rachael@2travelingdogs.com.
