This is Deputy Digby Pancake. I think you will agree that the last week and a half has been a little boring for me. I am not one to complain about having to rest…but even I have my limits. I keep hoping every day when I wake up that I won’t need to wear this shoe anymore. Persons keep asking me if I lost a shoe…or three. And I just tell them, no, I found one.
But every time I wake up, I see that shoe sitting by the door, just waiting for me to put it on. And I figured out that if I had to put on a shoe to go outside, I might as well make wherever I am going worth it. I thought about Germany. Yeah, I wanted to go to Germany. Why? Sitting around, I have been listening a lot to the radio and I heard someone talk about a cake they make in Germany called Kuchen. Yeah. Yeah. My shoe wanted to go to Germany. Why is it when you sit around doing nothing, you get hungrier? If I was made of cake, I would eat myself before someone else could.
Girl Person said that she didn’t think I should walk that far…you know…to Germany. So instead, she suggested a town nearby. A German town called Helen, Georgia. And she said that I just might be able to get some cake there. She said I certainly deserved some.
If there is one good thing about being slower, it is that the persons and Sheriff Brickle have to travel at my speed. I don’t just stop and smell the roses, I fertilize them, I water them and sometimes, I am so slow, they grow right before my eyes. So Helen, Georgia? I am coming to visit today. And I have an agenda. To stop and eat the cake. As long as I have to keep wearing this orange shoe, I am going to let it take me where it wants to go. And today? It wants to eat some cake in a town called Helen. Girl Person said that if I like Kuchen, I may have to change my name to Deputy Digby Kuchen instead of Deputy Digby Pancake. And I say that if the shoe fits…wear it. I also say that even if I can’t say kuchen, I can eat it.
I think that every little thing in life has something to teach us. Even cake. Because despite how bad things can seem sometimes, or when we feel discouraged, think about this. There is cake. And if there is cake somewhere like Helen, Georgia, there is always hope that things will get better. Someone loves you as much as I love cake. You are just as sweet to them as kuchen.
So won’t you come with me to Helen, Georgia today? My shoe may not take me on a long hike like I am used to. But if the road leads me to cake, who am I to complain? That is still pretty sweet. I may have hit a fork in the road. To cake.
Even when we think things aren’t going our way, and we have life all figured out, it has a way of throwing us an orange shoe. And if that happens? Put it on and ask it where you should go. It will lead the way.
