Especially since this state park is at the top of a mountain!
With a steep grade to get up to the campground, some campers may choose not to visit. The road up to the campground has a 25% incline.
We made it up with a 37 foot motorhome towing a car, however we would not recommend any larger. But with a little planning, this will be a memorable trip. And isn’t that what camping is about?
Only 8 miles from the Appalachian Trail and within the Chattahoochee National Forest, the park is full of hikes and sights your dog will love.
Named after its most treasured feature, Amicalola Falls – a magnificent 729-foot waterfall that’s the third-highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River!

- Dog friendly trails a short distance from the campground (we walked).
- Walk to the top of the falls right from camp.

- Private campsites with fencing separating part of your campsite.
- Newer and clean bathrooms and showers in individual stalls.
- Free laundry! A washer and dryer is available for the campground.
- Numerous dog friendly wineries nearby.
- Numerous grocery store options. But come prepared. The grocery stores are either in Jasper, Ellijay or Dawsonville, more than half an hour away.
- You don’t feel like you have to leave the state park to have fun! Waterfalls, trails and creeks.
- Mushroom foraging is allowed in the National Forest which is just a short walk from the campground.
With 24 wooded campsites that allows tent camping and RV’s, the campground at Amicalola Falls State Park & Lodge is a dog-friendly spot for your next Georgia adventure.
Each campsite is an easy pull-in or back-in site with water, power, grill and fire ring. The campground is very relaxing, peaceful and welcoming.
We really enjoyed getting to know the hosts and appreciated the care that they took in keeping the campground beautiful and clean.
We stayed for two weeks and we did have to move campsites.
But it was worth it! You can make reservations easily online. Make sure you check the interactive map for site specs.
Campsite #10 was the dogs’ favorite with a high location so that they could look down and watch people and dogs.
Our favorite campsite was site #24. Right on the end with plenty of shade that backs up to the forest, it was beyond peaceful.
With plenty of dog friendly wineries and trails nearby, you will not run out of things to do.
Right now, we need the outdoors and exercise more than ever. But in a safe way. We can’t think of a better place to do that.
Big campsites to social distance and fresh mountain air on the top of a mountain? Yes!
You have to take your dog camping at Amicalola Falls State Park!
Note, Amicalola Falls State Park does have a beautiful lodge. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed. However, if you are at the campground, and want to have a meal, you can go without your dog. Just don’t stay gone too long!
Amicalola Falls is a pet-friendly State Park and dogs are welcome in one of their two pet-friendly cabins.
