The Bat Salesmen

This is Fruitycake. Have you ever had someone knock at your door and you had no idea who they were? What was your first reaction? Do you think that they are selling something? Yeah.

Girl Person says that when she was a little girl person, people came to their door to try and sell them sets of encyclopedias. So people had to look up things in books back then? But what if the information changed the next day? I don’t understand.

She says there were also people who came to sell potato chips in big buckets. Now that is a salesman I can support.

But what I didn’t expect the other night were the bat salesmen. They showed up at a time that I’m quite sure was not legal. Not even in this Italy place when they eat dinner at 9 pm.

They showed up in a group, ready to come in, even if we didn’t answer the door. They had heard us complaining about the heat and the mosquitos. And they wanted to sell their services. They wanted to give us a demonstration like vacuum salesmen do. And I have to say, their methods were quite effective.

The problem was, they all came in to the rustico uninvited.

Now, my persons love animals. But they also love their space. There are plenty of places outside for the bat salesmen to live. Ummm, does anyone remember the batbox?

Salesmen have a way of being pushy. We all just need to survive and feed our families, don’t we? Even though we didn’t want to hire the bat salesmen for inside the rustico, we did tell them that outside the rustico would be preferred and welcomed. They insisted that since all our doors and windows were open, they assumed they could convince us otherwise, but appreciated the compromise.

You see, we may not want what someone offers us. But there is no need to ever be rude. That salesman is just trying to survive in a world that makes it difficult to do so.

So the next time you get a knock on your door or a phone call you didn’t ask for, remember to still be kind. It may be you, just like the bats, on the other side one day. Or night.
