Fruitycake’s Monday Affirmation

Laugh At Yourself

This is Fruitycake.

I threw up grass yesterday.

There. I said it.

And you know what my persons did? They laughed. I mean, they checked on me first because they love me and all that stuff. But then they laughed.

And eventually, I did too.

Well, technically I’m a dog, so I mostly wagged my tail. But you get the idea.

Sometimes we take ourselves way too seriously.

We think we have to say the right thing, make the right decision, cook the perfect dinner, have the perfect hair and somehow get through an entire day without doing something ridiculous.

Good luck with that.

Girl Person gets frustrated with herself when things go wrong. She replays things in her head. She wonders what she should have done differently. And sometimes I think she forgets that being human is supposed to be a little messy.

Being a dog definitely is.

There are times when you need to take something seriously. But there are also times when the kindest thing you can do for yourself is laugh.

Laugh when you trip over your own feet.

Laugh when dinner doesn’t turn out like the picture.

Laugh when you walk into a room and forget why you’re there.

Laugh when you realize you’ve been looking for the phone that’s in your hand.

And yes, laugh when your dog eats too much grass and then immediately regrets every decision he has ever made.

Laughter doesn’t mean your problems aren’t important.

It doesn’t mean you aren’t struggling.

Sometimes laughter is simply a tiny window you open when everything feels too heavy.

And suddenly, for just a minute, you can breathe again.

So today, we’re going to practice giving ourselves a little more grace.

And we’re going to say this one OUT LOUD:

I do not have to be perfect today.

I am allowed to make mistakes.

I am allowed to be ridiculous.

I am allowed to laugh when things don’t go according to plan.

I will not turn every mistake into a reason to be hard on myself.

I will look for the funny moments hiding inside the difficult ones.

I will laugh loudly when I can.

I will give myself grace when I can’t.

And today, I will remember that sometimes laughing at myself is one of the nicest things I can do for myself.

Because life is serious enough already.

And if you need someone to remind you not to take yourself too seriously, apparently that’s one of my jobs too.

I love you.

P.S. From Fruitycake: We really, really need your help right now. Donations have been extremely low, and the heat is still making everything harder. We urgently need help with groceries, fuel to keep the fans running, my care and our everyday necessities while my persons keep working to sell the rustico and get us back to the States.

If you can help today—even with a few dollars—it truly matters.

A Patreon membership gives my persons something especially important right now: support they can count on each month. You also get our weekday blogs, audio blogs and more from me.

If you can’t donate, please share our Patreon or this post. That costs nothing, and it could put us in front of the person who is able to help.

Thank you for sticking beside us through the hard days, the hopeful days—and even the throw-up-the-grass days.
