This is Deputy Digby Pancake. You know that a few things are a given. First of all, that every pancake restaurant in the nation is on my list to visit one day. Second, that I am a great backup to Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle. Third, that I believe his name is too long. Well, you may not know that I think this, but you do now, and it was a good place to say it. But last, you know that I go with the flow. Usually.

When the skies have been as smokey as can ever be imagined for the last eight days here in Sonoma County, you get to a point when you just can’t believe what you are seeing. Everyone has masks on. Which makes it hard to eat pancakes. You can’t comprehend how your world can change so fast. And you can’t believe that there is not a real end in sight. For anyone.

And although I know all of this, I also know something else. It is not under our control.
I am going to be honest right now, which is all a dog knows how to be. This is one of the worst things we have ever seen. But the smoke? I will tell you this. We feel the love more than the smoke.

But here is another honest statement from me. The persons are not feeling good. Their shoes are covered in ashes every day. They made Brickle and I stay inside yesterday, because every time they went outside, they got smoke in their mouths. They took two showers to clean off the dust and smoke. And it is just very hard to deal with. Although we have reservations here at camp for one more week, today, we are going to really think about this. We may have to leave if it is not better today. Sheriff Brickle has informed us that we cannot make ourselves sick waiting it out. We may be on the road sooner than we thought. And guess what? We can’t control all of this. We can only control how we handle it, how we let it affect us, and realize that sometimes, you have to let it be.
What I know is this, because I have heard the persons talk about it. We will start to head back to Florida if the smoke does not clear. There is no one telling us that we can’t come back in a couple months. I mean seriously folks, do I have to state the obvious? We live in our car. Our house is on wheels. Newsflash. And I have heard enough news in the last week to last me the rest of my life.

So let’s see what today brings. Persons like to control everything around them, and have plans. Well, sometimes, your plans don’t mean much. Can you imagine if I made plans? Pancake house at 9 a.m., IHop at 10 a.m….you get my drift. Or you probably smell it. I have been told that before.
As we see families that have lost everything, and hear story after story of love and kindness, it makes us want to stay. But sometimes, your choices are made for you. This may not have been what we planned for. But we learned so much from this. Sometimes, normal, everyday days are treasures. Sometimes, normal, every day things like fresh air to breathe and clean water to drink we take for granted. Maybe we don’t think about that electricity we have, or even our house we need the electricity for. And who is in that house? Don’t take any of it for granted, because you know I always say, you never know what may happen tomorrow.
