I Won’t Go That Fast

This is Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle.  If the days seem to be flying by lately, well,  you would be right.  If I seem to be getting handsomer…again…you would be right.

We have been parked at Memaw Macaw’s house now for almost a week.  And Boy Person has been busy fixing stuff for her.  They have both been busy talking to each other about who knows what.  Because I spend half the day…ok, most of the day…trying to cover my ears.

We had an eventful weekend.  Boy Person saved a dog from getting hit by a car that had escaped from someone’s yard.  Girl Person visited her family and some friends for a little while.  She also made us a cake.

Then, me and Deputy Digby tried to find a new routine for a little bit on where we wanted to lay in sunshiny. That is very important since we are going to be here for a few weeks.  And we tried to just stop and breathe for a little while. Digby could use some breath freshener by the way.

Every morning and evening, the persons have to take us to walk and hike on a safe road. You see, the road here is not how Boy Person remembered it.

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields

It was the country when he was here.  And in the country, things happened slow.

But now, I see nothing slow about it.  And I can’t arrest every single car that goes by.  My arrest book is not that big.  And I got to thinking as Sheriff.  Where was everyone going that they needed to get there so fast?  Why were they making my job so difficult?  And you know that the traffic is loud if I can hear it over Memaw Macaw.

Girl Person said that it is so easy to try and keep up with everyone.  She said that it makes her nervous when she is driving the speed limit and people are honking at her.  She said it would be easy to try and go fast too.

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don’t know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels

She said everyone is trying to keep up with everyone else, even if they don’t know where they are going.  We sure don’t know where we are going.  So why try and go the speed that everyone is trying to keep up with?  When did life get this way?

Seems to me, when I hear the persons talk about how things used to be, that they didn’t have so much to do.  Even for us, our days get busier with more work, more distractions, more traffic.  How much can persons keep running before they are running on empty?

I had a talk with Deputy Digby and shocker.  We won’t go that fast.  We never have, and we won’t start.  Girl Person said that all of the fast driving and fast way of life here made her realize that although she wasn’t maybe driving fast, she was still moving so fast that she wasn’t even seeing most of what was around her.  I knew that she wasn’t letting us stop and smell the alligator poop as long.  I knew that she was moving faster because the Deputy had not peed on my head in awhile.  But when she realized it, she said she was going to let us walk her.  You heard me.  We could walk her.  She said that she would go as slow as we wanted.  If we didn’t finish a trail, so be it.  She said what we were rushing for? So that we could hear Memaw Macaw and Boy Person contemplating why the time changed?  I wish I could change time and not hear that conversation.

I think that the more persons try to fit in their day, the faster they think they have to go, and the more angry they get because they can’t get it all done.

Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I’m running behind

It has been awhile since we were “regular life” and not on the road.  And it made us realize that maybe, just maybe, we don’t fit in to regular life anymore.  We have some serious thinking to do.  Even more serious than I normally am.  We won’t go fast with this decision though that we get caught up in traffic.  That is no fun.  And when did life become not fun?  That is not acceptable to me.

If you don’t slow down, pretty soon, you are going to be running on empty.  How so?  If you don’t take care of yourself and remember who you are and where you came from, what is left?  Stop and refuel.  Digby says get some gas.  He already has it though.

If you are one of those persons who like to drive fast, do you even know what you are missing? If you drove down the roads that you grew up on, wouldn’t you want to slow down and look…remember….appreciate?  Whatever road you are traveling down, someone is from there.  Let them drive as slow as they want.
