Fruitycake’s Thursday Affirmation
You Can’t Do Your Best Every Day
This is Fruitycake.
Here is something I think we need to understand today: you cannot do your best every single day.
Girl Person sometimes thinks doing your best means giving 100 percent every day. But what if you only have 40 percent to give today? If you give that 40 percent, maybe that is your best. Tomorrow you might wake up with 80 percent. Another day you might have so much energy and creativity that you surprise yourself. Life isn’t exactly the same every morning, so why would we expect ourselves to be?
Dogs understand this much better than persons. Some mornings I am ready to explore the entire mountain. Other mornings I would prefer to lie somewhere comfortable and supervise. I don’t consider the second kind of day a failure. I consider it excellent management.
We are allowed to have tired days. We are allowed to have distracted days, worried days, uncreative days and days when simply doing the things that absolutely have to be done is enough. Resting doesn’t erase everything you accomplished yesterday, and having a difficult day doesn’t mean tomorrow will be difficult too.
So today’s affirmation is ready! Let’s say it out loud!
I do not have to be at my best every day. I will give what I reasonably can today without comparing it to what I gave yesterday. I will listen to myself, give myself room to rest and remember that showing up in whatever way I can is still showing up.
And if today happens to be a 40-percent day, I suggest using at least 10 percent of that on something that makes you happy.
Personally, I recommend pizza.
