After traveling the United States Of America for over a decade, I finally understood the true need for understanding and compassion. Not just having these principles applied to animals. But to people too.
Out of more than 50 rescues and shelters we visited, I could count only a few as truly understanding the big picture of animal rescue. It wasn’t because they didn’t care for their animals. They truly did without question. But what was missing from many rescues and shelters was a willingness to work with other areas to network their adoptable animals or to simply forge friendships with other people helping animals. They felt like the weight of the world was on their shoulders where they lived and served, and yes, it was. But I believe more than ever, we can all lend a helping hand to animals everywhere. If we just look for ways. And if we know there was a need. And if saving lives is our goal, we won’t have our compassion defined by borders of states and by borders of countries. If a dog was in front of you injured or hungry, would it matter to you where the dog was from? Why does it matter when you see them online?
When I was a child, long before I even knew what animal rescue was, I remember looking in the classified section of a newspaper at dogs for sale. I didn’t even know what a shelter was. It wasn’t until my beloved dog was taken to a shelter because my family couldn’t care for her, that I learned what shelters were. I knew in my heart then that my purpose was to save all I could. I vow that to Missy more than ever now.
How far animal rescue has come!! I realize this more now that I live in Italy. You can see an animal online and help that animal or shelter or rescue wherever you are! How amazing is that? Small shelters and rescues in countries that normally would have no support or publicity now do. But do we overlook them because we don’t live there? What a waste!
Now that we are clearing out this property to be used for animals and wildlife, the concept of how much everything adds up is truer than ever. Looking at the big picture is so overwhelming. But doing little by little every day adds up to the project being completed. It’s no different in rescue. One life by another life. One city by one state. One country by another country. It all adds up to an earthly difference! Laws made for the benefit of animals in one country are often picked up by another. One higher standard of animal care in one country is often copied. One by one!
So is your compassion for animal limited to borders? I want to change that. We want to change that. Our big picture here is to have a network of animal rescues working together thru out the world by online means, an educational center and MORE! Will you join us…wherever you are? I know it sounds like a dream. Why would a rescue in Texas want to help a rescue in Canada? Why would a rescue in Cuba want to help a rescue in Ukraine? I believe there are ways to help each other. And we want to show that.
