This is Fruitycake. Some persons love to fall asleep to the sound of water. Some dogs like it too.

When Brickle was here with us, he had his own sound machine because he had trouble sleeping. He sure would love the sound of the waterfall here all day and all night. I’m sure he does love it. His resting place here has a wonderful view, but to me, he is everywhere wonderful.

At night here, the waterfall is especially loud. Our bedroom is a little high and the waterfall noise comes right in. But so does the other noises of the night. There are noises of rocks and boulders falling.

There are noises of screaming foxes and wolves.

And there are noises of the cinghiale. The wild pigs. And one pig in particular. Fred. That’s what I have named him, because all wild pigs should have a name to be held accountable for their actions.

We were trying to sleep last night and minding our own businesses. Girl Person had the business of worrying about all the things she worries about. Boy Person had the business of trying to fix everything in his sleep. But that screwdriver he bought yesterday that was actually a radio won’t help too much.

That’s when Fred the wild pig decided to grunt and make himself known as loud as possible. The persons thought that somehow, Fred had climbed up a ladder to come and share the bed. But I knew from my Fruitycake nose that he was not able to do the feats of an acrobat. And I didn’t feel like barking because the persons were already barking at Fred to not eat the melons and the squash and the tomatoes. I didn’t bark too, but what is left unsaid Fred is that this is my house. And my bed. And there is no more room on it. No room for you. No bed for Fred. Not on my watch.

Boy Person had went down with a flashlight in his underwear and Girl Person was screaming for him to be careful. That no squash and no melon and most tomatoes were not worth getting the wrath of Fred. Fred heard all the person barking and decided to kick rocks at him, knock down a wall and then run up the mountain.

I may not have barked at you too, Fred, but don’t take my silence as weakness. It took more strength for me to let Boy Person handle the situation. It took willpower for me not to jump out of the window. And it took self control not to get upset. Leaving something unsaid isn’t a sign you’re lazy sometimes. Sometimes it is just the best thing to do.

Speak up when you need to, but stay silent when it’s necessary to protect your own peace and to protect your heart. Getting involved in every conflict, argument and drama isn’t productive.

Saving my energy for Fred later on is what I will do. What will you save your energy for today?
