This is Fruitycake. Girl Person had fruitcake for breakfast. But it wasn’t me. Thank goodness. There’s not enough of me to go around. Or is there? My personality seems to grow by leaps and more leaps and then bounds, every day.
We had more lost hikers show up at our house this morning already too. They had on party hats. And they didn’t speak English or Italian. Or dog.

So we could only tell them they were lost. And it wasn’t a party for them any more. No one comes up this path willingly for the fun of it. Except us, I guess carrying groceries or plumbing supplies or water tanks.
Today, we don’t have Italian class.

But Boy Person has to go take back our rental car again.
You see, you can only keep a rental car here for 28 days. And then you have to take it back. And if you want another one, you have to wait two more days. And then they will either give you back that car or another one. I know. Makes no sense to me. But, we can’t buy a car here until they legally say we can. And so. Buses and trains and bikes for a few days. Non problemo.

Yesterday, Girl Person said it was the first time she had felt that she really wanted to go home. Home to that United States place, that is. We know Brickle’s house is here and ours too. But every day is a battle of sorts for us. Either learning the language, being confused, getting lost or getting up the courage to clean a bathroom that has been abandoned for decades. Yes. She put it off again.
But today, she has to clean it. Because Boy Person is going to working on getting at least a temporary solution to our water issues. We can’t get all new plumbing for awhile. Because that means all new pipes…they are lead. Since its about to get cold, we have to figure out something and quick. And Boy Person is pretty good at figuring things out. I guess our whole family is working on that.
Being homesick sometimes means you miss feeling comfortable. Knowing where your place is and where you fit in. It sometimes means being around others that you feel understand you or accept you. It’s knowing how to communicate and even knowing the little things like how to pay for something or how to read a label.
But this isn’t the time for us to lose our way like those hikers. We have to figure out how to make this work. And how to reach our goal of fixing this house to make it a home again. Now, that doesn’t mean we can’t take a break now and then. We are learning that too. A good hiker knows how to pace herself.
Now, we have a lot of work to do today. And I think if Girl Person can hold her breath to clean that bathroom long enough, maybe, just maybe, there will be some limoncello for her or spaghetti tonight. Let’s get to work!

PS… could you put a “No Trespassing ” or “Private” sign up?
I love the vintage commercials!
Just spray the whole bathroom with disinfectant, close the door for a day. Then hose, or bucket, it off. Then hopefully it’s easier.
