Old Habits

This is Peanut Butter Brickle. It feels good to write the blog today from where I used to live when I was a puppy. I’m at the first place my family brought me home from the shelter.

In some ways, it seems like that wasn’t so long ago. But in some ways, it seems like forever ago.

When we lived here before, Digby was with us too. So when I walk down the same streets, and he isn’t with me, my heart hurts a little.

But when I tell Fruitycake about our time here, it helps my heart. Because he listens to me and he likes to hear about Digby. Memories don’t seem so sad when someone is glad to hear them and it makes them happy.

But, as I sit here and relax at Gandma and Gandpa’s house, some old habits seem to be coming back to me. Like barking at every delivery truck around. I forgot how mad I get about them. Real mad.

And my real mad bark is surprising me. And Fruity too. He’s never seen this side of me.

Traveling has made me pretty laid back. I meet so many people and see so many different places that I never have time to get too emotionally attached. But here, where we used to live, I have all kinds of emotions and feelings.

I’m finding out as I get older that if there is something you don’t like about yourself, you sometimes have to remove the reasons behind why you do it. So delivery drivers? I’m sorry to say that as long as I’m here, you’re going to hear some barking.

Will Fruitycake join in? My habits may become his habits. I apologize in advance.

Old habits aren’t so hard to break when you remove all of the reasons behind them. You can think you’ll never be tempted again to make the same mistakes. You may think you’re strong. But like me, you may find your old habits come back when you put yourself into the same situation. So if you can’t handle the temptation, know your limits. Know your weaknesses. That’s one of the best habits of all.
