This is Digby Pancake. Oh, smells. I love smelling things. I love eating the things that I find after I smell them. Smells. They sure mean a lot. Can you imagine if we couldn’t smell?
I can’t imagine it. What a different world it would be if we couldn’t smell the grass or pizza or a mountain breeze.
Yes, you can smell a breeze. I smell the best things drifting by in a breeze.
But no matter how good a smell is in the present, I will tell you that a smell can take you on a trip to the past.
That happened to Girl Person yesterday as we were walking by the edge of the lake. We smelled suntan lotion on a summer day.
And she said that it was like she was transported back to a beach vacation when she was a kid. And it made her miss her family very much.
I wasn’t around back then, but I did see by her face that the smell meant a lot to her. She really didn’t even have to explain it. Because I know what a smell can mean. Whether it is the smell of something as big as an ocean or the smell of something as small as suntan lotion, the memories can be overwhelming. Smells mean so much.
Some persons think that the big things in life are what they will remember. That success you aimed for, the car you wanted to buy, the house you wanted to live in. But I will tell you, and I have so many years on me, that the things that end up mattering the most are the ones you forget…until you remember.
Last night, the light came in thru the RV windows when Girl Person was making my dinner.
She looked at me and said that the smell of tuna which is what I was having for dinner would always make her think of me…whether it is tomorrow or a hundred years from now.
I don’t know what I think about that, but I know how much persons need to stop and smell the roses, the breezes, the pancakes, the everything.
And when you complain about how your dog smells, just know that we only smell love when it comes to you. And we are made of love too.
