This is Girl Person. A few days ago, I posted a photograph of Fruitycake smiling on Threads, a social media platform where people share thoughts, photographs and conversations. I wrote that I was going through a major depressive episode, that I was trying so hard, and that somehow I had managed to make my dog smile.

I also wrote that he saves my life every day. I wasn’t trying to start a movement or inspire thousands of people. I was having a terrible day, and making Fruitycake smile felt like the one thing I had managed to get right.
Then something extraordinary happened. The post reached more than 51,000 views, and thousands of people began commenting. People from everywhere were sharing their struggles with depression, anxiety, grief, illness and loneliness. They shared photographs of their dogs and told stories about how those animals had helped them through the darkest periods of their lives. Some were dealing with cancer. Others had lost loved ones, were facing financial difficulties or were simply exhausted from trying to hold everything together. I recognized so much of myself in their words.
And then someone commented that just seeing Fruitycake’s photograph had saved their life. I had to read that more than once. Here I was, struggling to find my own reasons to keep going, and somewhere in the world, a person was telling me that my dog’s smile had helped them through a moment when they desperately needed someone.
I don’t know their circumstances, but I hope they are safe and receiving the love and support they deserve. I wish I could tell them how much their words meant to me.
When I feel like giving up, moments like that remind me that I still have work to do. There are rescue dogs waiting in shelters who deserve to be seen. There are people who need encouragement, stories that haven’t been told and lives we may touch without ever knowing it. For fifteen years, our mission has been to Make Rescues The Breed Of Choice. I always knew that rescuing animals changed their lives. But the thousands of comments on that photograph reminded me just how profoundly animals can change ours. My work gives me purpose, and when depression makes even that difficult to remember, I need the people who love me and the support that helps me keep going.
One woman wrote that her dog gives her a reason to get out of bed every morning. Another shared how her dogs helped her through months in the hospital. There were people facing cancer, people grieving and people trying to find their way through another day. And there was Gracie Mae, a rescue dog whose family found her in the middle of a busy road with a potato chip bag on her head. Four years later, she is one of the greatest joys in their lives. Imagine that! A frightened little dog wearing a potato chip bag became somebody’s reason to smile.

What affected me most was how many people who were struggling themselves took the time to encourage me. Strangers were telling me their stories, offering kindness and reminding me that I wasn’t alone. Some suggested rest, naps and snacks, which happens to be Fruitycake’s entire philosophy of life. Others encouraged me to take things one day at a time and seek the support I need. Their kindness mattered, and I hope the people who shared their own struggles received some encouragement in return.
Reading those comments made me wonder how many people around us are silently struggling. The cheerful person at the grocery store, the friend who always makes everybody laugh, the person posting beautiful photographs online. We see little pieces of each other’s lives and assume we know the whole story. Perhaps we could ask how people are really doing more often. Perhaps we could listen longer, check on someone who has gone quiet or simply remind a person that they matter. We don’t need perfect advice. Sometimes we need somebody willing to sit beside us while we figure things out.
Of course, depression is serious, and love from a dog or encouragement from strangers cannot replace professional care when it is needed. I know that. But kindness can help someone feel less isolated, and sometimes a small moment of connection encourages a person to reach for more support. I hope anyone reading this who is struggling will tell someone they trust and get the help they deserve. We are allowed to need each other.
There is something especially meaningful about seeing so many rescued animals in those comments. Dogs who were once abandoned, frightened or unwanted are now beloved companions helping their people through difficult days. Somebody gave those animals a chance, and those animals have given so much love in return. That’s why our rescue mission matters to me, even when I am exhausted and wondering how much longer we can keep everything going.
I cannot answer thousands of comments individually, although I wish I could. But I want everyone who shared a story, a photograph or a kind word to know how grateful I am. I hope we can keep encouraging one another. If you’re having a good day, reach out to somebody who might need a friend. If you’re having a difficult day, please let somebody know. And if all you can manage today is getting out of bed, feeding your dog and making it through the afternoon, I understand. Some days those are enormous accomplishments.
Fruitycake is sleeping beside me as I write this, blissfully unaware that his smiling face has traveled around the world. I want to be here for him. I want to see where life takes us next, help more rescue animals and continue sharing stories that might make somebody’s day a little easier.
I shared Fruitycake’s smile because I was struggling with depression. Someone told me that smile helped save their life. And thousands of people reminded me that we are all capable of helping one another, even while we are struggling ourselves.
There is still work to do. There are still people and animals who need us. And there is still so much kindness worth sharing. And…I love you.
