The Disappearing Rotisserie Chicken

Today is Sunday and that means sharing a story about Brickle and Digby! We never, ever want to forget them and the mission they started to Make Rescues The Breed Of Choice!  You can help us continue their mission here

This is Girl Person. It’s so comforting to me to look back and remember the good times that Brickle and Digby had at Granny Person’s house over the years.

Living next door to my grandparents most of my life was fun, and fun for Brickle and Digby. Most days, we would walk from our house thru the orange grove to watch the evening news with Granny, whether it was rain or shine. For Brickle, that meant he got peeled peanuts because Granny realized he didn’t like the skin on them. Digby often rolled his eyes at that. His culinary taste was less judgmental.

Snacks were always guaranteed at Granny’s house. A drink and a snack and conversation was something we all looked forward to. Digby also looked forward to being his sneaky self. And he knew the best snacks were out of his reach on the counter. You see, he didn’t have the longest legs.

Granny grew up and made it thru the Depression. Times were tough and she never got over her frugal ways, nor did she want to. She made everything stretch, including Digby’s legs. Because every day, when she left the carcass of a rotisserie chicken up there to make soup or food for her dog Cuddles, it was like a call to Digby’s stomach. But we knew he couldn’t reach it. Brickle? He was too proper to beg. And he also kept Digby from even trying to reach it with a growl and warning. The chickens were safe. Or so we thought.

Help here

But one day, as we watched the news with a mint julep and discussed the chaos of the world, chaos was happening in the kitchen.

Somehow, Digby had stretched his legs far enough to grab that chicken with the rabid intensity of a…hungry Digby. There is nothing more hungry. But he was quiet about it. No howling here. And by the time there was a commercial on, that rotisserie chicken had disappeared. Now, that pot of mashed potatoes in the back really must have caught his eye.

But a pot of mashed potatoes is much heavier, and this was the time the mashed potatoes gave him away. That pot fell down on top of his head. But they weren’t hot. No. They had already been up there for two days.

Granny was absolutely horrified. That chicken had been sitting on the counter for two days too. No, she wasn’t worried it had went bad. Expiration dates were not trustworthy, she always said. She was worried about Digby, and also that I wouldn’t drive her to the store to buy another one. We did. After the mint juleps wore off. She kept saying, “do you think he at least enjoyed it? I hope it didn’t go to waste.”

Well, Digby was fine. The baby turtle he had eaten the day before that, the old Vienna sausage behind a dumpster and chicken poop weren’t bothersome to his stomach, and this wasn’t either.

That night, Granny had a new rotisserie chicken, and I made the new pot of mashed potatoes. Digby and Brickle still got a bite. And Brickle tried his best to look the hungriest to anyone who would hear the story. After all, he was the innocent and starving one.

All is well that ends well, they say. And the disappearing rotisserie chicken was the story of legends from that day on. We never got him to stop jumping up on her counter to take a look. We never stopped laughing either. Now, I’m the only one still here to tell the story. And although that makes me sad, here is the story to tell when I’m gone too one day.

Important message:

We are only two persons and one dog trying to make a difference in the way animal rescue is perceived. We want the world to see how much each animal’s life is worth. And we want the world to see how much the people who do the work in shelters and rescues are worth.

We have told each of our dog’s thoughts and stories every day since 2011. And we thank you for each day you’ve embraced us and our mission to Make Rescues The Breed Of Choice!! We can’t do it without you!!

But we are also taking it as a month by month commitment. This endeavor is costly for us to produce it every day without sponsors. It is. So if you feel compelled to tip here and there, we appreciate it.

Month by month. So here is our drive for March. All tips for the remainder of the month go to supplies like necessities to be able to provide the blog and content and sharing of animal rescues on our pages. Content creators and writers all make their living thru their audience. And we think of our audience as friends. We never ever want anyone to give when they can’t. Or don’t want to. But if you think what we do and will do for March and 2025 is important, we thank you!
