To Jack

To Jack

This is Fruitycake. I am kind of at a loss for words today. I know that’s not the usual. But even my grumbles aren’t grumbling.

The reason for my quietness is that my friend in this Italy place, Jack, passed away. He was sick on and off since I’ve known him. But despite that, he was always, always happy. He was always hungry, and he was always a friend. To everyone he met. Everyone.

That’s a very rare thing to be in today’s world. Everyone’s friend. Because most people want to argue, fight, or just ignore others. Jack was the type of friend who took care of his persons. He was our Italian teacher’s Jack. And during the day, Jack even watched her mom person and kept her company. Me and Jack played on the beach, we took walks, and we loved each other, even though we only knew each other for a short time.

Our Italian teacher, Elisabetta, said Jack was better than a person. He wasn’t a dog. That’s because we all wear outside costumes, but inside, we are who we are. We are all the same.

And being a person isn’t always the best thing to be, but in Jack’s case, he was better than a person. He was the best he could be! Kind and loving and caring. He was joyful and happy and full of smiles. We may have been born in different countries, but our paths somehow crossed. And I’m privileged to have known him. Jack was a rescue dog. But all he cared about was that he was loved and that he gave even more love in return.

Some friends may come and go. But true friends never leave us. Even though our outside costumes fray or our bodies fail, we are always who we are. We never leave the ones we love. And we will most certainly find each other again.

I’ll miss you, Jack. This Italy place is great, isn’t it? I’ll be sure and eat some pasta and pizza and focaccia for you.

I won’t be here much longer because we have to move.

But I know time, space, and even places won’t matter when we see each other again. Run free. I love you, and please know your job here was well done. And you deserve to be without pain now. You earned it, amico.
