That’s Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park (also known as Hanna Park) in Jacksonville, Florida.
We have to admit that it’s one of our favorite places we have camped in the USA.
Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park is a 1.5-mile public beach and city park in Jacksonville, Florida.
It is located at Mayport in the Jacksonville Beaches area.
It consists of 447 acres of mature coastal hammock, which is increasingly rare along Florida’s heavily developed Atlantic coast. And let us tell you…we love it.

- Unique campsites that have left nature alone! The campground may be harder than some to navigate due to trees. But we love the privacy and peace that comes with a little extra maneuvering.
- Dog friendly environment. Dogs are allowed on trails and the beach on leash. No stress knowing where you can go.
- Walking to the beach from your campsite is possible anytime! When the park closes to the public, many times it felt like we had the beach to ourselves.
- The Florida sun and summer can get hot! We found this shaded park to be such a nice retreat. Often, it was almost ten degrees cooler than the outside “world”.
- Driving distance to Amelia Island and Historic Fernandina.
- Within a short distance, head to the the St. John’s River Car Ferry. The St. Johns River Ferry is a car and passenger ferry that connects the north and south ends of Florida State Road A1A in Duval County, linking Mayport Village and Fort George Island via a pleasant sail across the St. Johns River. The 0.9 mile voyage crosses the St. Johns River 2.5 miles inland and departs every half hour. Ran by the National Park Service, take a ride with your dog to access unique state parks and Amelia Island.
- Close to natural grocery stores (one of our favorites, Native Sun).
- One of the most desirable surfing spots are located here called the Mayport Poles! Don’t know how to surf? Take surfing lessons nearby!
- Bike trails and hiking trails are located in the park.
- A beautiful lake with rentable boats are available.
- Laundry room is available in the campground.
- Extended stays are available with approval.

- Beautiful, dog friendly beach, almost two miles long!
- A small campground store for the persons to buy ice cream for us.
- Watching the birds and alligators at a distance at the lake.
- Plenty of room to hike!
- Nice, big, shaded campsites
- Nearby preserves and parks within a short drive.
No park or campground has it all. But this comes close. No, it’s not a fancy resort with cable or WiFi.
But if you’re looking for a place with plenty to keep you and your dog active in the Florida sunshiney, we recommend booking your campsite.
Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park has a large campground with 290 campsites located in a wooded area along the Atlantic Ocean in the Jacksonville area.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RV’s (45 feet maximum).
Each campsite also has a table, fire ring, and grill. There are also 6 cabins available to reserve.

Campsite 175 right by the lake. We’ve never been able to book it! Tell us about it!
Outdoor recreation activities include hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, boating, and wildlife viewing.
You can also go to the beach to surf, snorkel, swim and hunt for shells and sharks teeth!
The camp store rents mountain bikes, beach cruisers, adult tricycles, kayaks, canoes and even games.
We sincerely miss this park! We considered it our home while we were there.
