Dog Food, Brickle, and My Ego

This is Girl Person. Today, I had something happened that bruised my ego a bit.

If anyone has followed this page for any length of time, you know we only give our dogs real food and not “dog food”. But one challenge we have had with Brickle, especially the last two weeks, has been hard. His appetite has decreased and he has lost too much weight. He wants to walk most days. And if he doesn’t eat enough, we just can’t do that. We’ve spent so much money trying every type of meat, food, anything he will eat…and although he may eat a little, it’s not enough.

Honest talk. Today, after a beautiful day, I said a prayer. A prayer that if there was any food Brickle wanted, that I would figure it out. All of a sudden, I thought “dog food.” I tried to push it out of my mind. But I also knew I love him more than anything, even more than myself. And he can have anything he wants. And so…we tried. And guess what? He ate more than he has in weeks. And I’m ok with that. In fact, oh, I’m more than ok with that. He looked at me with eyes that said it all. And so, off we go tomorrow to stock up on whatever food is best for him.

We may know what is best for our dogs, or at least try. But never let your ego get in the way of what they need. Never think you know it all. I truly believe real food has kept him with me this long. He has had real food for 13 years. But. If his body or even mind wants something else, he can have it.

Thank you for your support as we navigate the senior dog chapter with Brickle. If you’d like to help with his care, we appreciate it more than you know. You can help here
