When Everything Hangs In The Balance

This is Fruitycake.

I usually know what to say. I am a dog, after all, and dogs are very good at making complicated things simple. Eat when you are hungry. Sleep when you are tired. Stay close to the persons you love. Bark when absolutely necessary, and occasionally when it is not necessary at all.

But today, I do not know what to say.

My persons are going through one of the most difficult and emotional times of our life together. There are things happening that we cannot talk about yet—not because we don’t want to share them with you, but because sometimes you have to live through a moment before you can find the words to explain it.

Right now, everything feels like it hangs in the balance.

There are decisions and possibilities in front of us that could change almost everything about our lives. There is hope mixed with fear, relief mixed with sadness, and the strange realization that sometimes the thing you have prayed for can still hurt when it begins to happen.

Listen to the blog here

And somewhere underneath all of that, we have to believe there is a reason we are being asked to go through this.

For almost all of my persons’ life together, animal rescue has been at the center of it. It has taken them across that America place, across oceans, into shelters and into the lives of dogs and persons they never would have known otherwise. And now, when animal rescue itself is changing and we feel more strongly than ever that there is work we are supposed to do, we have to believe that somehow this difficult chapter is making room for that work.

Maybe we cannot see how yet.

Maybe that is what makes this so hard.

Girl Person keeps trying to figure out the right thing to do. Boy Person is trying too. And I am doing what a dog does when his persons don’t have the answers.

I stay close.

We aren’t ready to tell you everything today. We just need you to know this is a very big moment for our little family. Please keep us in your prayers and thoughts, and please keep believing in the animal rescue work we are trying so hard to continue.

Because when everything hangs in the balance, sometimes you have to believe that what feels like an ending may actually be making room for the work you were meant to do next.

We have to believe that today.

I’ll end today’s blog with my daily affirmation.

Think About A Favorite Thing And Why It Makes You Who You Are

TODAY’S AFFIRMATION, Say it with me!

I will think about a favorite thing and why it makes me who I am. What I love can reveal my values, memories and hopes. I will honor the small things that make me feel alive. My favorite things tell a true part of my story.

The story of each of us is ever changing.  Some chapters you feel like you won’t survive. And this is that chapter for my persons.  I hope you will give them your prayers and encouragement because we want to show up for you and all who need us.  We just feel like we may not have the strength.

P.S. The persons are going to take a little time this weekend to rest, regroup and make some very difficult decisions. They have pushed themselves so hard that they have made themselves sick, and we need to remember that taking care of ourselves is part of being able to keep doing this rescue work. But the bills, groceries and rescue work do not take a weekend off. We need your support—not only financially, but because right now we need to know that you still believe in us, in this work and in where we are trying to take animal rescue next. Our new This Is…Me project is about making sure real rescue dogs are seen, believed and rescued. If you believe this work matters, please help us keep going. Every $5, $10, share, prayer and encouraging word matters.
