This is Fruitycake. Boy Person does a lot around here. He keeps our water supply up, he works on our house, and he keeps us warm.
We would have thought that winter would have been over by now. We definitely aren’t used to this much rain and cold.
But the rain and cold came back with an agenda this week. There isn’t one day that it’s not supposed to rain.
I am not as afraid of water as I used to be. But I still don’t like to get wet. And when you live on the top of the mountain, there is no choice but to keep surviving and that means when it rains, you will get wet. So will all the firewood.
We thought that we had more than enough wood. But it’s been very cold, especially at night. And so Boy Person keeps trying to look for wood that is dry enough to burn. It’s not such an easy task. Being from that Florida place, our wood skills and fire skills are not the best. We admit that. So our supply is running very low and we are working with what we’ve got.
What we have got is damp wood. And so with cold showers still being worked out, he felt pretty bad for Girl Person. After he boiled her some water for a shower last night, he set to making a fire.
And it wasn’t working. Nothing was working. He kept on and on and on and on. Talking to himself and being mad at no fire. He took me in another room, shut the door, and while Girl Person was in the tea kettle, he took matters into his own hands.
He put something on the fire to make it start as a last resort. And I guess he put too much of it on there. And all of a sudden, there was an explosion that opened up all the doors with a fury.
A rush of wind. A sudden wave of despair. Because there was still no fire, Girl Person jumped out of the kettle in panic at what had happened now, and Boy Person was just yelling, “I’m alright!”
Sometimes, you gotta just wave a flag of defeat.
But this was not that time. Eventually, he got the fire started. Girl Person finished her tea kettle shower, and we had dinner with gratitude.
Because things can always be worse. We just hope that doesn’t happen…
