Most dog lovers see their dogs as more than just pets. In fact, most dog owners see their dogs as friends, companions, or even family members. Like people, dogs need companionship, fresh air, and exercise in order to thrive and be healthy. While taking your dog for a walk through the park or around the neighborhood is fine, hiking is an excellent way to spend time with your four-legged friend and enjoy nature at the same time.

Home in the outdoors

According to the American Hiking Society, dogs make great companions for outdoor adventures. Dogs are willing and eager to hit the great outdoors and are comfortable in all types of terrain and climates. Dogs are by nature pack animals who thrive on being around those who are closest to them. Hiking with your dog can strengthen the bond between you and your dog through shared experiences and adventures.

Benefits of hiking with your dog

Besides the obvious health benefits of walking, hiking with your dog can also be safer for you and your family. If you like to hike in remote areas, having your dog along to help warn you of any unseen danger can be a matter of life or death. Dogs have an excellent sense of smell and can pick up the scent of other people or animals that you may not be aware of. Hiking with your dog leaves you less vulnerable to animal attacks, snake bites, or other unseen dangers.

There are many well-documented stories of dogs that have saved the lives of their owners while out camping or hiking in remote areas. Dogs have a natural sense of direction that can be helpful if you happen to get lost. There are also stories where dogs have found help for their owners who have been injured. While not all dogs may be heroes that can save your life while you’re out exploring, they can provide you with a new perspective on nature and provide loyal companionship.

Here are few key points to keep in mind if you plan to have your dog as a hiking companion.

Use a leash- Keep your dog on a leash at all times. Dogs often pick up the scent of something and will want to follow or chase it.

Provide for yourself and your dog- Make sure to bring along plenty of water and snacks for yourself and your dog. Dogs can get dehydrated very easily especially in hot or warm weather.

Make sure it’s legal- Wherever you plan to hike, make sure that dogs are allowed on the property.
