Once upon a time, in a lovely, shaded, tree filled campground lived a squirrel.
This squirrel wasn’t just any squirrel. No squirrel is just any squirrel. This squirrel was very interested in nuts!
He loved, loved, loved nuts! And that was his name.
Nuts the squirrel was a hard worker. He had worked hard all of his life! In fact, Nuts was known far and wide for his many years of detective work. He had cracked many cases, but his most famous case was called The Curious Case Of The Disappearing Nuts. It had been a hard one to solve. Especially since the culprit was himself and he didn’t know it. But Nuts had decided to retire and relax! It was time. And that Florida place seemed like a good place to do it! Many of his friends had decided to retire there and recommended it.
Instead of solving cases, Nuts The Squirrel liked to spend his days climbing trees, making noise and eating. There had never been enough time when he had a job to do all of these fun, fun things! He liked that there always seemed to be plenty to eat in this lovely, shaded campground! There was birdseed and fruit and food that campers threw away. But his favorite thing to eat was nuts and he felt this was appropriate. Quite appropriate! That was his name!
But a squirrel has to do more than just eat and climb trees and make noise! And so Nuts decided that since he was hanging around and being retired at the lovely, shaded campground, he would see what hobbies he might like to have! What could his hobby be? He saw campers who liked to cook and grill stuff. But all his recipes included nuts and he just knew everyone would try to eat his culinary creations. No. Being a chef wasn’t the hobby for him.
He saw campers who liked to sit around and play cards. Oh, this seemed more like it! He had a great poker face! After all, he had been a detective! But he didn’t like solitaire and no one else would play with Nuts. No one wanted to lose all the time! He was quite a good card player. But this wasn’t the hobby for him.
One day, Nuts was eating some nuts and thinking about all of the many crimes he had solved, and what a good detective he had been. Then, a big, blue RV came pulling into site 165. Why did they have to park here, he wondered. His favorite tree was in site 165 and now he had this big, blue RV by it and it was blocking his usual path up the tree! His tree! What was he going to do? This was interrupting his retirement. But all of a sudden, he knew it! THIS was going to be his new hobby. He was going to get this RV out of here and away from his tree!
Nuts didn’t like to get mad. Despite missing a chunk out of his ear from a previous case with a raccoon that he didn’t like to recall, he was a calm guy! He would remember that case of the missing trash and the sneaky raccoon forever!
But since this was going to be his new hobby, he had to do a good job so that he could tell all his special squirrel friends about it. He had to be the best detective ever and crack the case of how to get this RV to move! He would have to come out of retirement to solve this. But he just knew that the Case Of The Rude RV would be the talk of this lovely, shaded campground!
First, Nuts had to make a plan. If he was going to get this giant, blue RV away from his tree, he had to look like he meant business. He thought about buying a business suit. But wearing a tie in a lovely, shaded campground didn’t make sense.
So Nuts The Squirrel thought some more. How could he make this rude RV move and get away from his tree? This was a case for a professional. But he knew he could do it! He figured out a plan. So early in the morning, Nuts would jump on the RV. He would pounce on the RV like a cat! He would shake the whole RV and he had fun doing it! But this thing wouldn’t move. It was still blocking his tree! This wasn’t solving anything!
In the afternoon, Nuts would jump on the windshield, he would make noise, he would be as squirrel like as he could. But it didn’t deter the RV from standing its ground by his tree. And Nuts was getting tired of this case. The Case Of The Rude RV had to be solved! And as Nuts slept one night on another tree, which wasn’t his favorite tree, he dreamt up a plan. He was so excited about his plan that he climbed down from the tree as soon as the sun came up. Hard workers do that. And it was true. Nuts had to admit that he had been approaching this all wrong. He didn’t have to move the whole RV to get back his tree! He just had to chew off some of it! And he decided to sing a song to celebrate his smart detectiveness!

My life has been a whirl,
A great detective I am
I tell the bad guys to scram!
I still can crack a case
With my detective skills,
But don’t ask me…
To miss any meals!

He looked at the tree.
He looked at that rude RV.
And he knew what he had to do. Sometimes a case doesn’t get cracked overnight. But an RV can crack overnight! That is, if Nuts the squirrel chews on it!
So when everyone in the RV had went to sleep, Nuts got to cracking this case. He chewed. And he chewed. And he chewed. The persons told him to stop chewing up their house on wheels. But he didn’t listen. He was a detective. He was focused on his work. They asked him if they should come outside and have a talk. Well, Nuts wasn’t one for chit chat. He was one for cracking. He kept on with his work. After all, he thought this was the right thing to do! Until he saw two dogs named Peanut Butter Brickle and Digby Pancake. Their face told him a fact. And all detectives listen to facts. This was their home.
But the tree was his home.
Nuts The Squirrel wondered if perhaps he needed a softer side. Could this case be cracked any other way? Surely a good detective could see all angles. Brickle and Digby told Nuts that they would only be in campsite 165 for a few more weeks. Only a few more weeks!
And they asked Nuts if he could find a new route up his tree until they left! Could he use a detour? Maybe the other side? Nuts had not thought of this!
The ability to crack the case had been with Nuts all along. A detective’s skills never leave. Even if you’re a retired squirrel. Nuts realized all he had to do was talk to Brickle and Digby. You see, sometimes just talking about a problem can solve it. No, they couldn’t move the RV. No, Nuts couldn’t move his tree. But there was a way to live in harmony. Everyone had a softer side. Everyone was able to work it out and Nuts was able to crack the case! He also cracked the RV. But he said he was sorry, and Brickle and Digby said they would just have something to remember him by.
So as Nuts the squirrel climbed up the other side of his tree, and gazed down at the Big Blue Treat Wagon RV, he felt proud.
He felt like telling all his friends that with just a little bit of understanding, even the biggest cases can be solved. And so he did tell them! And everyone congratulated him on cracking one of the biggest cases ever in this lovely, shaded campground. But he still jumped on the RV every morning. Nuts The Squirrel not only found a a new hobby, but he found new dog friends. Coming out of retirement has been worth all the work. And even though they would part ways, Brickle, Digby and Nuts The Squirrel knew they would all remember each other forever.
And they all lived and cracked more cases…and RV’s…happily ever after.
