The Little Rotten Pumpkin

This is Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle.  I heard someone say one time that when it’s pumpkin season, all is gourd. Actually, I have never heard that.  But I’m clever like that.

Persons seem to think that there are appropriate seasons for things.  Like, only in the spring can you wear white or whatever.  Only in the winter can you sport those boots.  Only in the Fall can you like pumpkins.  Or pumpkin pie. And then, that’s that.

I agree. There are seasons.  Obviously.  But why do persons think less of something when its season has past?  Meet the little rotten pumpkin.  We’ve been carrying her since North Carolina.  When she was in her season.

We got busy.  We thought that we could use her for a little pie later.  And then later and later it became.  The weather started to change.  We broke down. Digby Pancake hurt his foot.  And it seemed that there was no time to bake a pumpkin pie.

So we didn’t bake that pumpkin pie.  And yesterday, well, as it sat out on the picnic table, Girl Person remarked that she wished she would have used that little pumpkin.  Now it was rotten.  It was just sitting there.

And I thought, well, I would have liked a pumpkin pie.  Sure.  Sure, I would have.  Digby would have liked some pumpkin pancakes.  And now the little pumpkin could not be used for that.  No.  It could not.

But then I thought about it.  Sure, it wasn’t used in the season everyone thought it should be used in.  But it still had brought enjoyment.  It still went with us when we traveled and we could look at it on our dashboard.  It sat on the kitchen counter with all the other fruit to be looked at.  And it even got to sit outside on the picnic table for a few weeks as others campers got to enjoy its beauty too.  It’s season may have passed.  But it was still useful afterwards.  In fact, I think the little rotten pumpkin had the time of its life. Even if no one else recognized it.

So little rotten pumpkin?  We may have to say goodbye, but your time here was not wasted.  You see, not every pumpkin was born to be a pie.  Even though persons may tell you that.  If you waste your whole life trying to be something or do something you don’t want to do, that is when time is wasted. Be who you are and use your worth.  You have it, in whatever season of life that you are in.

Goodbye little rotten pumpkin. Your beauty was out of this world.

I will always appreciate when you were here. Although we have to say goodbye, it will always be pumpkin season in my heart.
