This is Peanut Butter Brickle. I’ve had many years of experience in being a dog. I bet you’ve had a few years experience of being a person.
And my years of experience have come in handy with teaching Fruitycake how to be a part of our family. A part of our lives.
At first, he wasn’t sure that he wanted to be in a family. He was used to being on his own. And really, being on your own when you are a dog has advantages. You may disagree. But I will explain.
Being a dog on your own is hard. Finding food and shelter are a big part of every day. So is being safe and out of harms way. But it also feels free. No one is telling you what to do all of the time.
No one expects you to do everything they tell you to. You get to make your own decisions.
That’s very important to us dogs. But persons never seem to get this. Especially when we become “your dog”. When that happens, we aren’t ourselves fully.
That’s ok some of the time. But not all of the time.
Being “your dog” means love. And that’s so special to us. But sometimes we feel like everything you do for us comes with conditions. I know you don’t mean to do that. It’s just habit. But imagine if you were on a leash all of the time.
You had no say in any of your day. You were taken care of. But you lost yourself. How would you feel?
As I’m teaching Fruitycake how to be a part of our family, I’m seeing things I think that the persons can work on. The most important thing to me as I get older is making some of my own decisions. Not being told what to do all of the time.
I hope that one day persons will realize we are more than “your dog”. We are an individual just like you, wanting to be happy.
When we look up, and see you are disappointed in us, or upset, it hurts us. So when you look down, try a little harder to see us for us. Look down, but don’t look down on us. We are living this life together.
