When The Bridge Is Closed

This is Deputy Digby Pancake.  Have you ever had one of those days?  You know.  One of those days?

When you’re weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes, I’ll dry them all (all)
I’m on your side, oh, when times get rough
And friends just can’t be found
Like a bridge over troubled water

Granny Person used to say that “this too will past.”  But what if you can’t get past whatever it is that you are trying to get past?  What if the bridge is closed? She never mentioned about that.

When we were on our hike yesterday, we came across one of those closed bridges.  It is not often that our path gets blocked.  Even if we have to pull Girl Person down a mountain or a swampy hill or even through a creek or along an ocean sandbar, we get by.  But this bridge was part of the trail, you see.  It went over an alligator filled river.  And well, it wouldn’t have been a good idea to swim across.

IMG_4876.JPGGirl Person said we had a few choices.  First of all, we could either turn back the way we came.  Or, we could find another way to get around the closed bridge.IMG_5006.JPG

Now, I am not one to do extra work.  I am also not one to call myself late for breakfast.  And this was not part of our normal routine.  But Girl Person said that sometimes, things that make you go out of your way, or take another path to get where you are going are the best.  I tried to listen, but it was hard over my growling stomach.  However, as Sheriff Brickle always does, he noticed something up on a tree.  A tree that we would not have seen if the bridge would have been open.  Looked liked a stack of pancakes to me.

Girl Person said it was one of those things that we could look at, but not touch. And as I was looking at it…sorry.  I wanted some maple syrup.

I wondered how long this tree had been there. And then, I wondered how long the bridge had been there.  And what did people appreciate more?  The bridge that made their journey easier, or the trees that made that bridge? Seemed to me that we don’t appreciate much at all.  We just always want to do what is easier.  We always do what is convenient.  And because of that, we miss out on a lot of wonderful things.

Now, I am not saying that the bridge was unnecessary.  But I am saying that if your path gets blocked, consider the fact that maybe you should go another way to find your destination.  And maybe, it is even a new destination.  Also, if your bridge gets closed, notice the things around you when you go another way.  And maybe…just maybe….if you have to…build another bridge.  Make your own way.  Build it with things you love, appreciate and enjoy a new viewpoint.

We have learned that life’s path don’t always stay open either.  You may think you know where you are going, and then you forget, you get sidetracked like when I find an old chicken wing in the campfire.  If we wait for someone else to clear our path or build our bridge, it may never happen.  It is up to each of us to know where we want to go.  Where we want to go.  And that may be the hardest map to read of all.

Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
Oh if you need a friend
I’m sailing right behind
