That Moment Before

This is Deputy Digby Pancake.  It’s been said that there are some things worth waiting for.  I don’t know who said that, but waiting is not my strong point.  Especially not yesterday when we went to Helen, Georgia. I had one thing on my mind.  Cake.  Not waiting on cake.

I knew before we got there what my game plan was.  The cake.  I saw the pretty buildings in Helen, Georgia and I saw all of the people walking thru town.  I saw all the neat places to go.  I was trying to be patient.  Really.  I was.

I told you yesterday all about the kuchen, the German cake in the German town called Helen in that Georgia place.  And I learned once we got there that not only did they have cake, but they had cookies, they had it all.  And I almost could not wait.  I wanted the cake. Oh, the anticipation.  It was almost too much to bear.

The drive had taken us an hour to get there.  I just wanted to get to that cake and maybe even get an extra one to take home.

As we waited outside for Boy Person, I imagined that cake.  That kuchen.  I imagined what kind he would get.  I imagined what it was going to smell like and if I could eat it faster than Brickle.  And then he came out.  And it was like all of the town of Helen, Georgia seemed more beautiful.  It seemed so sweet.  It was a dream come true.  And that moment…that moment right before I took that bite, all of my senses felt alive.  All of my hopes and dreams for cake came down to that one second before I tasted it.  And I knew.  That moment before, that moment right before, was just as sweet as the cake itself.

There once was a famous bear named Winnie the Pooh.

“Well,” said Pooh, “what I like best,” and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn’t know what it was called.”

And I knew what he was talking about.  Because in all of our travels to many places, the excitement of getting there and imagining what it is going to be like is sometimes better than when we actually get there.  Imagination paired with anticipation may be one of the things that dogs are best at.  We imagine by smells what a place will hold out for us.  And we don’t even try to hold back our excitement.

I think that persons sometimes try not to get too excited.  They think that something will disappoint them that they have planned to do for so long. So they don’t feel everything that they should be feeling. They think that if they show their excitement that somehow it won’t be as fun.  Well, I can tell you this.  That if you LET yourself be excited and if you anticipate that special thing or that special place that you are going to, well, no matter if it is what you thought or not, that moment before will take your breath away.

That cake in Helen, Georgia was even better than I thought it would be. But it was that moment. That moment before that I will always remember.  Think about all of those moments before in your life that you may not have appreciated.  And start appreciating them now.
