Tunnel Hill, Georgia

Tunnel Hill Heritage Center features the one and only engineering marvel of its time, the Western and Atlantic Railroad tunnel, as well as the Tunnel Museum and the Clisby Austin House. Dogs are allowed outside on the grounds, hiking trails and in the tunnel on foot.
Mount Rachel Hiking and Biking Trail
Dalton, Georgia

This is a great place for a short, 1.6 mile hike with your dogs. Bikers and hikers go opposite directions on the trails for safety. We like going during the week to avoid crowds.
Lafayette, Georgia

This was one of our first places we took the boys during our time near Dalton. A dirt road leads you up to a small parking lot. The trail is a loop that takes you 1.8 miles. Some parts of the trail are steep and slick so plan accordingly. But the views are so worth it. We also found many mushrooms while foraging here.

Sometimes, Brickle and Digby like to people watch and they loved this little park. A dog park is even available after a walk around the track or pond with the ducks.
Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center

Almost 10,000 acres of preserved and uninhabited landscape encompass the park, making it one of the largest outdoor green spaces in the area. Much of the park can be explored through a variety of outdoor activities like hiking with your dog! Stop in the visitor center for a map.

Don’t tell anyone about this amazing, storybook Trail. Perfect for seniors, this short trail takes you to numerous waterfalls and rock formations. Bring a camera!

Hikers, mountain bikers and travelers with dogs will find some of the most beautiful trails in Georgia, winding through hardwood forest and blueberry thickets, crossing streams and circling a huge lake. We loved camping here as well, with beautiful views right outside our windows.
New Echota State Historic Site

New Echota is one of the most significant Cherokee Indian sites in the nation and was where the tragic “Trail of Tears” officially began. Hike with your dog outside but not in buildings.

If you’re looking for peace and quiet among the ducks, this little Park is perfect for a short break. With a paved path around a pond, make friends with nature. If you like disc golf, this is the park for you.

The park site was the last seat of Cherokee national government before the 1838 enforcement of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 by the U.S. military, which resulted in most of the Cherokee people in the area being forced to emigrate west. Great trails and beautiful springs make this for a lovely day trip.
Varnell, Georgia

Prater’s Mill was built in the mid-19th century. It is located in Varnell, Georgia. Serving the city of Dalton as a working mill, it is now used as the center piece of country fair. Walk the grounds with your dog and look at buildings from the past. Great picture opportunities!
