Why You Have To Camp With Your Senior Dog

Why do humans and our dogs slow down with age? Research show that we lose muscle with age due to being less active, changes in diet and a decrease in hormone production. This is true for our dogs as well. We have to make more of an effort to stay happy and healthy together.

If you love your dogs as much as we do, you what them with you as long as possible.

But as we begin to slow down too, we may wonder what we can do to achieve that goal. What about travel? How can camping with your dogs help you both live longer and better together?

Take it from Peanut Butter Brickle and Digby Pancake, camping and traveling together makes life worth fighting for!

Many people are so quick to not give their dogs enough credit. We may think that they are too old to travel or that they won’t want to try new things.

Have we made an effort to find that out?

We think camping full-time is one of the best decisions we ever made for our dogs.

Order our new organic dog shampoo!

To see them wake up each morning with a purpose and excitement are not things we take for granted.

Would they have this same sense of purpose and excitement if we were stationary? For our two dogs, the answer is no.

But we know that not everyone can camp and travel full-time with their dogs.

But why should you choose camping as a preferred way to travel?

  • You never have to take another vacation without your dog! Plan trips with your dog’s interests in mind and you may find out your interests expand as well.
  • Camping gets their brain working and ours too! New sights, smells and places stimulate our minds.
  • Camping makes your dog feel valued. When we leave our dogs for fun, how do they feel? Include them on hikes, sitting around the campfire and dog friendly sightseeing.
  • One of the best parts of travel is trying new foods. Let your dog share dog friendly recipes with you on the road! We often take a local recipe and adapt it for our dogs.
  • Staying active is key to a longer life. If we need to exercise more ourselves, take the opportunity to do it together with your dog.

Digby has had his share of health scares the last few years.

And oddly, we began to notice a trend in when most of his health issues happened…when we were stationary for an extended amount of time.

This made me worry at first. Would we always be able to travel with him? What would happen if we traded in our RV for a house without wheels?

Would he have the same sense of purpose to reach new destinations and new campsites? For us, we came to a decision. As long as our dogs want to travel, we will do that. No matter what it takes. Why?

We always say we will do whatever it takes to keep our dogs with us. But do we? Are we truly putting them first?

Putting our dogs first means we have to know them. What their needs are, what makes them truly happy and what they individually like to do is just the beginning.

As our dogs have gotten older, we have had to make adjustments. We aim for shorter travel days and more private campsites.

We take into account the weather, what temperatures help them to thrive and we make sure we can stop driving in order to not interrupt their normal dinner time.

Now, more than ever, many people are working from home or are able to work remotely. If you’ve been thinking of full time travel with your dog, why not take a test run?

Pitch a tent at a local state park. Or perhaps just start by trying a hike in a new area.

Dogs make our life better just by being with us. But it’s up to us to help them find their joy and inner sense of purpose and accomplishment.

Camping and traveling with our dogs changed our lives. And we have no doubt that it’s made our time together longer with Peanut Butter Brickle and Digby Pancake.
