Camping reservations are hard to come by right now! Camping has perhaps never been so popular.
And that’s a great thing for people and their dogs wanting to social distance but still enjoy nature safely.
But if you are like us, you may find yourself without reservations on a long, holiday weekend. Ok. Maybe that’s just us! But we live in our house on wheels. So what were we to do? We decided to go Boondocking at North Georgia wineries.
What is boon-docking? It is when you camp without electricity or water hookups. It’s one of our favorite things to do.
And once you try it, you will understand why! This is camping at its finest.
Where you can truly get back to nature.
You do have to do some planning. But it is well worth it and your dog will thank you.
Georgia may be known as the Peach State, but grapes are a passion there too!
The North Georgia mountains are now emerging as a prominent wine region. So we decided to stay at two different wineries in North Georgia over the long weekend.
We found campsites to accommodate our size motorhome on an app and website called Harvest Hosts.

The first winery we stayed at with Brickle and Digby was Engelheim Vineyards.

Engelheim Vineyards was such an impressively beautiful location. We were told we could set up anywhere in the front fields under the trees away from the parking lot.
So we found a spot where we could sit in our camp chairs overlooking the vineyards with a bottle of wine we purchased before they closed. We fed the dogs their dinner and then took a walk with them thru the vineyards! This winery is beyond dog friendly!
They welcome dogs in the tasting room and even have treats for them. They make it a point to be friendly while respectfully social distancing.
We slept peacefully with the sounds of the country at night. The next morning, we ate our breakfast overlooking the vines. It was nice to have the place to ourselves.
The tasting room opened early afternoon, so we purchased another bottle to take with us. It felt nice knowing we were supporting a family owned business. It also felt nice it was free! But it was time to move on. Harvest Hosts spots are for only one night.
So we headed to Sharp Mountain Vineyards in Jasper, Georgia!

We talked to Jody on the phone at Sharp Mountain Vineyards when she had a last minute cancellation on the long weekend. We were so appreciative to hear that they had one spot under beautiful trees in a separate overflow parking area.
We were asked to call just a few minutes before we arrived so that Ron could meet us outside and show us where to park the motorhome. Right away, we were welcomed with a big area to park under the shade of the trees.
After we set up camp, we walked to the tasting room to taste a few of their wines and relax. We picked a bottle of Chardonnay for the evening ahead and we walked with the turkeys and dogs in the vineyards.
The next morning, we took another walk thru the vineyards and had it all to ourselves!
We did another tasting of their reds and purchased another bottle to take with us. It was such a great experience to learn about Ron and Jody’s dedication to their craft.
They have picked wine varietals that are not common in Georgia. With a view of Sharp Mountain, this 5 acre vineyard produces Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Gewurztaminer, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Primitivism and Trebbiano.
Ron and Judy grow, produce, harvest and bottle all of the wine. They want everyone to have an experience when they visit. And this is a must stop on any North Georgia wine tour!
