This is Deputy Digby Pancake. When was the last time you did nothing? You know. The enjoyable kind of nothing. I am an expert.

It’s one thing to sit. And it’s another thing to enjoy. And yet another thing to concentrate on the doing nothing part.

I thought about all of this, which was actually doing something, when I saw a swing here at camp on the beach. There it was. Waiting for someone to notice it. I did.

I have looked at it every day. Yet I haven’t seen anyone sit in it. And I haven’t seen anyone swing in it. And I would assume that is what you do on a swing.

Girl Person said it’s because people are busy doing other things.

Like walking on the beach. Or looking at their phones. Neither she said is a bad thing. But sometimes, she said a swing invites you to sit for awhile. And just be.

I thought about that. And it’s like dogs have their own swing every day. We are good at just being. And living. We don’t need a lot of extra. Except extra maple syrup on my pancakes. And maybe though, if I had my own swing, sometimes it would be nice to have someone sit with me too. Without their phone or anything but themselves.

Simple things in life may seem unimportant. But when was the last time you enjoyed a simple thing?

Never take for granted that life doesn’t have to be complicated to be good.

It doesn’t have to be filled with stuff and distractions. Because when it comes down to it, we all need to sit for awhile.
