Once upon a time, and that time was last Tuesday, lived a wise owl who loved to give advice. Her name was Winky because she gave her answers to others with one wink or two winks!
So during the time of this story, which was last Tuesday, Winky The Wise Owl was doing what she always did on Tuesday. This was her busiest work day! She was high up in her tree, and one by one, others lined up to ask for her advice. She felt very important!
First in line there was a squirrel.
The squirrel had waited and camped overnight! He had to make sure he was the first in line to ask Winky The Wise Owl if he should use bark or twigs for his nest that winter. One wink would be for bark. Two winks for twigs. Winky The Wise Owl turned her head all the way around and winked twice. Twigs it would be!
The next individual in line to ask for Winky’s advice was a snake. This snake was new to the area and had just slithered into town. But as soon as she did, she heard about Winky The Wise Owl and rushed to get her place in line! She had to know if she should hide in tall grass during the day or a pile of leaves. She was new to this area, she explained again. Winky spun her head all the way around and winked once for tall grass. Definitely. Grass.
Winky The Wise Owl was already getting tired from giving advice. But she looked at the line waiting to see her to ask her very important questions. Winky had been in this business all her life. She followed in the wings of her family. And her reputation was known far and wide! But sometimes, yes sometimes, she wanted to ask her own questions too.
And although she would look in the mirror to find her winking answers, she was running out. And she needed advice! What would she do?
That’s when the next in line to see Winky stepped up to her tree. There were two dogs named Peanut Butter Brickle and Digby Pancake. They barked their hellos and looked up at Winky. She looked very wise on this Tuesday. And she also looked very tired! Peanut Butter Brickle knew that their question would be an important one.
Brickle and Digby had heard about Winky The Wise Owl from many places and individuals on their travels.
They heard about all her great advice, and they knew how it felt to want to help others. They also knew helping others could make you tired! And they just wanted to ask Winky The Wise Owl one thing. Peanut Butter Brickle asked Winky if SHE needed advice. Brickle asked Winky if she needed to ask them a question. They were there to help her.
Winky was Wise, but she wasn’t expecting anyone to help her on this Tuesday. She turned her head all the way around. And instead of winking, she decided to sing her answer.
I am Winky The Wise Owl
I get asked who and what and if and how!
All the questions others ask me,
I wink the way I think things should be!
With the turn of my head,
And the wink of my eye,
I know all the answers
Up to the sky!
But I need to know,
Should I take a break
Should I take a vacation
Should I bake a cake?
Should I fly on a plane
Or sail on a boat
Should I learn a new language
Or make friends with some goats?
Give me an answer,
Is it ok,
To take a vacation,
And come back to winking another day?
Peanut Butter Brickle and Digby Pancake decided to bark their answers. Digby was the best at barking, and he let out a howl this Tuesday that you could hear on a Wednesday! Yes! Yes! Winky The Wise Owl needed a break. They told her that no one can help anyone else unless they take care of themselves too. But Winky wondered. Who would give advice when she was on vacation making friends with some goats on a boat?
Peanut Butter Brickle and Digby Pancake said they gave advice too and would be in her town all week. They would happily take over, but they didn’t wink. They could only give their advice in peanut butter cookies and pancakes. They asked her one last question as the line behind them hit longer. Would she let them help? She spun her head around and there it was! The answer with one wink, which meant yes! Yes! Winky The Wise Owl flew away to buy her tickets for the goat ride! And promised she would be back!
Peanut Butter Brickle and Digby Pancake took a break before they even started to get their cookies or pancakes all ready! They had a lot of advice to give! They knew that even if you are the wisest owl like Winky, everyone still needs a break to be their best!
After a week of fun, Winky The Wise Owl flew back to her tree on a Wednesday. She left the busiest day to Brickle and Digby of course!
But they made sure to save her one cookie and one pancake for one last question, and it had to be from Winky. Winky asked Brickle and Digby if they could come back next year for her next vacation. You see, she had already made plans to fly on a plane with some chipmunks. Brickle and Digby barked and she got a cookie! That meant yes, because mysteriously the pancakes were gone.
Winky The Wise Owl learned it’s ok to ask for advice. It’s ok to realize no one has all the answers. And it’s ok to take a break with some goats on a boat.
And Winky The Wise Owl, Peanut Butter Brickle and Digby Pancake winked together happily ever after.
