No Big Deal

This is Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle. There are things that can happen in a day that makes you question your own sanity. There are things that can happen to make you wonder why you got out of bed. Or why the rain keeps falling just over your head.

Yep. When it rains, it pours. Usually. And I have to say…it may not have been raining cats and dogs here yesterday. But it was raining inconveniences, broken car parts and broken dreams.

Ok. Maybe I’m being dramatic.

But it was like one thing after another kept happening. No. Nothing big. But a bunch of small bad things aren’t any fun either. The Jeep breaking. My tummy issues. The fact that Girl Person forgot to tighten a lid on our water and it spilled in her backpack and made it look like she couldn’t find the bathroom. Yeah. All that.

But as usual, when the persons have their pity party, us dogs don’t Rsvpee. Nope. And as we took a little walk at camp, here came three little furkids. A little barky with a little bit of attitude and a whole lot of cuteness.

They had a job to do. They just didn’t know it yet.

They didn’t know about all the little bad things that had happened in our day. But they were about to teach us a lesson. They looked at me, I told them, and their response? Ugh. No big deal. And if that wasn’t a big deal when they were so small, I knew it to be true.

In fact, it was such an instance of no big dealness that our conversation was quite brief. Because who wants to talk about the bad of the day when there is so much good? Who wants to let unimportant little things get to you when there are also a lot of little good things that are bigger than that. But not bigger than my handsome. They understood that. And I’m glad we met. Even though I’m a Sheriff, I can still learn stuff too.

It’s true. Dogs may not have the same pressures you do. But if you make a big deal out of things that shouldn’t be a big deal, it makes our job harder to make you feel better. And that’s not fair. Good days can be had most any day. If you recognize them.

Sometimes it takes looking at matters from a different perspective to see how little they are. Don’t wait until a real big deal happens to teach you a lesson.

Imagine that your future self today was telling you how big of a deal you were making of something for no reason.

And instead imagine that your younger self was telling you that you should have been made better for the next day. Then…ask yourself, is it really a big deal?
