The Big Picture

This is Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle.  Oh, it’s the last day of 2018 I hear.  I hear that persons all get out their calendars, and not all of them are 2 Traveling Dogs calendars, I might add.

They look at their calendar and they say, oh, it’s the last day of the year.  What have I done?  Did I do everything I thought that I would?  They think that it’s time to forget that now and make a list of things to do in 2019.  That is the next page on their calendars.  And they do that.  List, list, list. Well, if your list doesn’t have peanut butter on it, I don’t want to read it.

Persons say they need to lose weight.  Well, how is that going to affect your dog, I ask you.  If you cut down on your food, does that mean we get the extra food, or is there less food all around?  Once again…does that affect the peanut butter? Or the pancakes?  I am asking for Digby.

Persons say they want to exercise more.  Sure, sure.  We like that if you take us with you.  How about a walk around the neighborhood? If exercise means you go to a gym place with a guy there named Jim, I am not sure I like it though.  Unless he has peanut butter.

Persons say that they want to make more money.  If you can add an extra jar of peanut butter to your list, that is great.  But if the making more money stuff leaves us by ourselves, I am not down with that.

Persons say that unless they accomplish all of the things on their lists for 2019, they will have failed.  And I ask you this.  Has anyone ever really remembered all that they went to a store for?  I can guarantee that there is always something left off of your list.  But I bet you survived.  I bet the next time you went to the store, you remembered it more because you forgot it the first time.  And Girl Person says that is how this year is going to be for us.  Instead of lists, we are going to look at a picture.  The big picture.

You see, the persons were feeling pretty down.  They didn’t accomplish all that they set out to in 2018.  In fact, they forgot everything on their list.  But as the calendar pages turn, maybe the lessons of last year will carry over to this year.

We got to live by the beach at camp for a few months.  I liked that. No. I loved that.

We traveled the whole Blue Ridge Parkway.  Digby loved that.

We had breakdowns.  Foot injuries. Mishaps. None of us liked that. Oh, who can forget that orange boot?!

We had good food, good rest, good company.  And we didn’t even put that on the list.

As the persons looked at our top pictures that you liked in 2018, they saw it.

The big picture.  Maybe, just maybe…and there aint no maybe about it…success isn’t anything you find on a list.  Perhaps success lies in the smile of a dog.  Or 2.

And maybe if you ask your dog this year what you should accomplish, your list will get a lot shorter as well.  No jokes about my tail.

Really, at the end of the year, if the ones are there to take a picture with you, isn’t that the best accomplishment of all?

Calendars are great. But they can’t tell us how much time we have left with the ones we love.

It’s not about what you didn’t do.  It’s not about the money you didn’t make.  It’s not about the extra pancakes on your butt…says Digby.  All that matters is the Big Picture.  And we just took a great one because you are here with us.

Hi Digby & Sheriff PBB! We adopted a rescue pup from China in 2017 & another in 2018. Along with our rescue cats (of 9 yrs) and 2 kids, we’ve also had ups & downs. However, the big picture is that the ups far outweigh the downs. And our family feels complete thanks to our 4 legged kids – Coco & Max (kitties) and Hazel & Izzy (Golden pups). Thanks for sharing your journey. Happy new year!! Hope you have many great adventures in 2019 ❤
