Just Under The Surface

This is Sheriff Peanut Butter Brickle.  It has been said, by me, that my colors could be one of the most wondrous things in the world.  Yes, it is true.  What is even more amazing is that my colors can be seen year round.  Unlike the beautiful leaves that turn different shades in the Autumn.  Or fall.  However you want to call the the season between summer and winter, your choice.  However, I prefer the more proper version.

When the seasons change, we take it for granted. Kind of like you take looking at me for granted.

We know that when Autumn arrives, with all certainty the leaves will turn their bright colors, let us look at them for a bit, and then they will fall with a flurry to the ground.

But what you may not know, is that even when these leaves are green, their colors are underneath the surface.  Those colors are always there.

It goes without saying that there are a lot of things that take up our time.  Sometimes, maybe you even feel like you are your job.  Sometimes, you may feel that you are just someone’s caregiver or a parent.  You may forget that underneath all that, the colors that you had when you were born, the bright ones, well, they are still there.

But what is it going to take for you to remember those colors? Will you be like the leaves that don’t show them until right before they fall?  Or can you find those colors now and give yourself a little more time to shine?

You see, if you don’t take the time to remember your true colors, and what makes you happy, how will you make the world a better place?  The trees take care of themselves with their falling leaves and it is part of a process.  Travel helps us to see all of the processes that go on in the world.  In every place, it is a different story.  But it all helps the earth to function.  So take the time to remember today how by remembering your colors that you can be part of the world being a better place.

Just like you may never get to see my colors again in this exact light, do you really know if you will see another autumn season?  This season may be a once in a lifetime.

As we are in Asheville, North Carolina, and the leaves are changing and falling, we are so happy to be here.

Because this was another lesson in our book of travel.  Having no path lately certainly makes more time to appreciate and less agendas.  img_0632

During Autumn, every leaf is as pretty as a flower.  Look up to the sky and find your light and your colors that have been there all along.

No one can take away a tree’s beauty.  Not even when it loses its pretty leaves.  And if that has happened to you, embrace the opportunity to flourish again. If a rescue dog like me can show his true colors, well, you know what to do.

When I lived in Florida and my family all lived hundreds of miles away from me, in Louisiana and Oklahoma (later Arkansas), if I went to visit them on a vacation, one thing I never did was plan what I would do there. My sister, on the other hand, always had an agenda, what they would do when, how long they would take to do it, a complete schedule. I always said the purpose for my trip was to forget about having a schedule. I had no list. Once my mom asked me what I’d planned to do that day and I told her I had no specific plans. “Oh [your sister] always has an agenda when she comes. She has a list of what she wants to do, where she wants to go, how long she wants to take, which days she plans to do them.” To which I responded, “Well, I plan to be completely listless for two weeks.” If the weather did not cooperate on a day we thought we’d go on a picnic or hiking or on a scenic drive, there was no upsetting the applecart. No plans. I was on a no path path. I could read all day, and since it was usually late October and early November, a rainy day spent sitting by the fireplace and reading was perfect. A sunny day, perfect for a picnic and for going on a drive to Mt. Magazine to take lots of pictures of fall colors. We decided at breakfast. Read, go for a drive to take pictures and have a picnic, go down to the old part of town and browse antique shops… No path path is a way to relax. No stress if things don’t go as planned, because there is no plan. And when you can relax, you can be who you really are.
