What’s In Your Cabinet? What’s In Your Drawer?

This is Deputy Digby Pancake. They say when it rains, it pours. I say, when you try to outrun the rain, it will still pour on you. Especially when you are stuck up a mountain in Tennessee trying to hide from it.

If you have ever been worried about something, but have no way to know if you really should worry about it, well, you know how we felt up on that mountain in Tennessee the past few days. We couldn’t really check the weather reports very much, which in actuality had got us to this place anyway! We didn’t know if the rain was from the storm, or what was happening. And the truth was, did it matter so much? It was raining. And after the past week of moving five times, Brickle and I decided to take the opportunity and sleep it off. And sleep it off we did. While Girl Person went cuckoville and decided that everything cabinet and drawer in this RV needed reorganizing.

I am not sure I understand the point of closets. I am not sure I understand the point of clothes. Or pants. But that’s a story for a different day. But let me add, I am not sure I understand the point of shoving stuff where you can’t see it, so that you have to expend energy to open said cabinet. Or drawer. And I am also, also, also not sure why no one can keep stuff organized in there either. It’s like a black hole in there.

When you move and travel as much as we do, you don’t have much time for a lot of cleaning and organizing. But apparently, you have plenty of time to collect junk and shove it in there and forget about it. Girl Person says that if someone came over here, she would be shoving junk everywhere, even the oven, and then she would probably forget about it later. Not such good flavor to bake a shoe.

But with all the rain, and with all the mess outside, Girl Person decided she would try to pull it together. It’s been a long time on the road, and we have let a lot of things go that should have been done. Like making sure that the forks and spoons all point the right way, I suppose. Like making sure that dress that fell on the floor of the closet last year gets put back on a hanger. Like finding that one shoe she lost two years ago that she knew she would never go anywhere to wear. May I suggest the oven?

Watching her complain about how disorganized she was made me exhausted. Seeing her shove paper receipts in a box and then saying she would get to it later made me exhausted. Seeing Girl Person get down on herself for just living life and not worrying so much about these crazy things made me exhausted. Because you know what? I would have rather went for a hike in the rain then watch her from my bed. They call me Dirty Digby for a reason.

If life was meant to be only rearranging shampoo bottles in a cabinet or moving pants around which are unnecessary anyway, what kind of life would that be? I am sure if you didn’t have tomorrow, you wouldn’t worry about it.

My question is, does anyone really have all of their stuff in their closets and their cabinets and their drawers neat and organized? Or are we all just trying to get by? None of us have everything together, and if you do, I wonder what you missed by doing it. Probably putting on your pants. A little rain this week has taught us a few things. We are a mess. And also that getting back to basics without TV and without phones and computers was a blessing in disguise. The persons seem to rely on that stuff too much. And if it were all taken away tomorrow, would they have anything else stored in their life’s cabinet like good conversations, good books that they read, or photos or life lived? Or would it be empty? An empty cabinet is a clean cabinet. But if you don’t fill it, you have nothing to take out of it.

So we will be here in the Cherokee National Forest until Wednesday. We are simply too tired to move! And we are happy to be tired and not move.

So stay with us when we try to make our way to Asheville…if they open the campground back up that is…

Well, Digby, you just don’t realize how important it is to have all the utensils in the drawer pointing the same direction. Seriously! I might leave my clothes closets and drawers disorganized, but my utensils have to be neatly placed and pointed in the right direction. Actually, doing it that way makes it possible to get more in the drawer.

Oh dear family. I’m just so happy you are all okay. I’m organizing and throwing (HOPEFULLY!) a ton of things out today too, and it’s so stupid why I’ve kept so much of it as long as I have as well!! Stay safe and get some rest. Safe travels!!! Much love. xoxoxo <3 <3 <3 <3
